Hey guys.

I’ve noticed this white splotch on my purple tang recently but did not think much of it. Recently my powder blue tang died, i’m unsure of the cause, but I remembered that the powder blue tang had a similar white splotch a week or two prior to him dying.
I’ve attached photos of both the purple tang (with white splotch) and the powder blue the day before he died.

This all began when I started using a new T5 lighting unit. At the same time I also started dosing the tank to set it up for coral (Potassium and nitrate remover, Aragonite A, B and C for calcium, magnesium and alkalinity)

Welcome to Reef2Reef!

In the fifth picture down, I can see some discoloration to the powder blue's head, but to be honest, I can' see anything in the purple tang pictures - just a very slight lightening midbody - is that what you are seeing?

Were either fish breathing fast/heavy?

Here is a link to some helpful hints for important information we need in order to try and determine what's going on:

Hey, thanks for the response.
Is the lightening in the mid body normal? This only seemed to occur after putting the new lights (I began dosing the same time I started using the new lights).
Notable water parameters:
- Copper 0.05ppm (trying to reduce it from treatment I finished about 4 weeks ago)
- Salinity: 1.022
- Ammonia: Haven’t checked in the past week, but it was around 0.1ppm
- phosphates: 0.15ppm
- nitrates: 0.18ppm
Tank:
- 350L
- Running sump, protein skimmer and canister

The powder blue tang was breathing heavy prior to its death. The purple tang is fine.

I am fairly new to this thread, apologies if i’ve left out any information

If the paleness is on both sides, it could be a dress response. I’ve seen some purple tangs really wash out color wise in captivity if everything isn’t just right.
I would check the current ammonia level, and then based on the powder blue breathing fast, watch the purple VERY closely.

I have noticed that once the lights turn on his like that, then an hour later he’ll be back to normal, just wanna make sure his okay.
the ammonia did spike 2 weeks ago, i’ve since been doing regular water changes.
thanks for the help, i’ll stay on the lookout
