Hi Gang,

I'm building my first reef tank and I have acquired a used Red Sea 525XL. My plan was to use this tank as a partial peninsula tank. 2/3rds of the tank will be in a corner of my living room and a 1/3rd will extend past the wall. I want to remove the black back of this third and paint the other end black that will be next to the wall. Does anyone have any information about the paint and/or coating that was used by Red Sea? Does anyone have any tips to remove this paint and/or coating? Many thanks in advance.

I have a RSR 250 and 525XL. The 250 backing is not paint, it is a plastic compound of some form which you should be able to remove with a razor scraper. It’s not overly strong as I found to my chagrin when my Tunze scraper damaged it. I believe the 525XL uses the same compound, it certainly feels like it.

Thank you for the information. I'm sorry you accidentally scratched your tank. Did you repaint it and if you did, what did you use? I wanted to paint the end of my tank.

I haven’t repainted it. My tank is installed fairly close to a wall so it’s not really feasible to paint in that space. I was able to put a bit of electrical tape over the (thankfully small) scratches to hide them and the area is now covered in Coralline algae, so it’s not an issue anymore.

Razor blade like suggested above. Spray windex and it gets even easier

I removed the old back and painted with black acrylic. I made a 1/3rd peninsula corner tank. The cabinet was white so I replaced it with wood wrap veneer from Korea. I just finished my rock scape. On the back I have a veneered cover plexiglass that is supported in an u-channel and Velcro to give it a finished look.
