Red Sea E170 Black sponge bubble trap???

I have had my tank for about 4 months and today took out the black bubble trap sponge on top of the return pump to clean. Wondering if I should just leave it out?
Has anybody taken this out? Am I the only one that has it in?
Just wondering.

I’ve been wondering the same thing I hope somebody else replies or have you figured out what to do?
