Hi folks

So just setup a new reef led 50 red sea
I see there are a few different built in programs. Running the 18k program now.
I never understood the Kelvin rating. I have a fairly new red sea nano max and im used to using Kessil on my other big tanks

What is the difference between the 18k 12k and 23k
Im assuming one is more blue then the other?

Suggestions for a mixed reef? Thanks

They are made with something like Kessil Logic that keeps the coral spectrum right like Kessil's Logic does.

The lower K settings would be more on the whiter light-looking reef than an higher K specturn setting. 12k would make your reef look a lot whiter than the 23K setting. It's talking about how much of the blue spectrum that you'd like to see in your reef.

FWIW:
12K would be too white for my taste, so I would mostly settle in with the 18K for daylight hours, then have it shift to 23K closer to lights out.

23K should make your corals glow (pop) more in the evenings.

Is the factory program any good or am I gonna toast coral

The spectrum setting is good, but I'd think you would want to cut back the Led 50's intensity to see how your corals react or use the acclimation mode. If your corals are looking good after a week then slowly raise the intensity each week.

Curious to see what you finally set up with. There isn’t a lot of info about people schedules for Red Sea lights. I have my lights set slightly more than 18k

My tank is only a month and a half old so I might go down and try to get closer to 16k or 17k so it’s a bit more natural looking and leave it there.

Definitely use acclimation mode, especially if you had a really weak light before like me. I didn’t run mine long enough and had an algae bloom for a couple weeks. It’s gone now though.
