Our QT Procedure:

Here at Tide Pool Aquatics, we take pride in the health of our fish. Our quarantine procedure starts with our suppliers. We only work with the best in the industry to assure that we are receiving healthy specimens from the start. Moreover, transportation stress is minimal due to our short distance from the distributors.
Once received and acclimated, we bathe our fish in a 37% formalin at 1mL/gallon mixture for about 30 minutes to minimize the introduction of disease into our systems. Once the formalin dip is complete, we move our fish with specimen containers or by hand to the main quarantine system. This system holds over 250 gallons and is running two protein skimmers and an oversized UV sterilization unit. Unless the fish exhibits signs of disease, they remain in the main quarantine system for a minimum of 2 weeks until they are listed for sale.
It’s uncommon for disease to make it past the formalin dip and the oversized UV sterilizer, but we have designated hospital systems for medicating if this is the case. If a fish exhibits signs of disease, then our quarantine procedures are broken down to accommodate each species of fish. When it comes to medication, we prefer to stray away from copper if possible. Since copper can be especially hard on wrasse, tangs, and angels, we prefer to use hyposalinity or Copper Power. Flukes rarely survive the formalin dip, but Praziquantel takes care of the stragglers very well while doing minimal damage. Before a fish is listed for sale it will have undergone at least one full treatment of Praziquantel.
At the end of the 2 week process, healthy fish are listed for sale. In the case of a fish contracting disease part way through the quarantine process, the timeline resets. The fish must be disease free for another 2 weeks before going on sale. Because we want the best possible outcome for our fish, we take care to make sure they are in their best health with great coloration before leaving our facilities. Lastly, we guarantee that all fish we sell are eating prepared foods, even the finicky ones.
