My question is it necessary to run GFO and carbon in a filter media bag? I have them in the front of my sump when’re all the water flows through.

could I be running something better is the media cup/socks?

I run mine in Aquamax reactors (different ones for different purposes, not combined)

Carbon only when something wonky is up

pump(s) that go to those reactors take from and return water back to sump
