Hi there,

I am new to salt water aquaria and I’m looking into my first reef tank. I have a hard time deciding between the Redsea reefer 350 deluxe (47x21x20”) and Waterbox reef 100.3 (36x24x22”). They are both around 75 gallon but the reefer 350 is 4ft and the reef 100.3 is 36”. Does anybody have experience with them and if so let me know what they think. Also what do you think is better, a longer tank or slightly higher and deeper tank.

Thank you!

Reefer hands down. Longer tanks give more room for fish to swim and mark territories. Always a plus.

If possible I’d go for a custom tank: 48” x 20” x 20” about 80 gallons. This is about the smallest tank I’d fit a Tang in and only the smaller Bristletooth Tangs, if I could choose I’d put any Tang in a 90+ gallon tank but a smaller Bristletooth may well be doable in a tank of these dimensions.

If you choose to consider larger tanks in the future here are my “ideal” dimensions for each size category. Note that I sacrifice height for length so these are my preferences:

100 Gallon: 50” x 24” x 20” (125cm x 60cm x 50cm) OR if you don’t mind a more narrow tank: 60” x 20” x 20” (150cm x 50cm x 50cm)

120 Gallon: 60” x 24” x 20” (150cm x 60cm x 50cm) OR: 72” x 20” x 20” (180cm x 50cm x 50cm)

150 Gallon: 72” x 24” x 20” (180cm x 60cm x 50cm)

180 Gallon: 84” x 28” x 20” (210cm x 65cm x 50cm)

Standard 120 is 4 x 2 x 2 feet

Standard 150 is 5 x 2 x 2 feet

Standard 180 is 6 x 2 x 2 feet

And the biggest commercially sold tank I can find is the RSR 900 XL which is 80” x 26” x 26” (200cm x 65cm x 65cm)- 223 Gallons

But if I could have a tank with that volume it would be:

96” x 28” x 20”

Depends what you can fit. I wanted the 100.3 but opted for 70.2 The reputation of Waterbox is highly regarded and quality is exceptional.

Sump is also great the 100.3 has a decent size ATO as well and loads of room under cabinet. Not sure on the 350reefer what about a 300XL if you go red sea?

Small update.
I got the opportunity to buy a Waterbox reef 130.4 on a discount. So this is the one I purchased. It is just a tad bit bigger than the xl 425.

I have a Red Sea E170. If I was (and will be soon) you go long and not too deep. So hard to really get to things, build, repair, fetch pets that are sick or dead. There look good but if you are one that is picky, not so deep is way better. Hope that helps. I am a Red Sea fan too.
