EDIT: Just Preordered the Reefer S-1000 instead of the XXL900

Things are starting to take shape so I figured now is a good time to start my build thread for my Red Sea Reefer S-1000.

A little background. This will be my second tank, and I want to apply everything I’ve learned into it. I started with a 75g marine land about a year and a half ago. Although I love my current tank There are several things I did that I’d like to change.

Currently I am still gathering all the equipment and planning out the details but here is the plan so far.

Lighting:
4 Hydra 32’s
They will be mounted in a custom hanging fixture. The plan is the lights will be flush mounted in a removeable panel that can be either modified or replaced for the addition of more lights. I’d like to add something like reefbrite XHO strips or a couple more hydras down the road.

Flow will be handled by 4 ReefWave 45’s. 2 on the back on one on each side. I thought about using MP40’s and although they look clean in the tank, having the dry side sticking out is really just an eyesore for me.

I will use my existing ecotech S2 return for now and I plan on upgrading it to the L2 not long after.

Same scenario with my skimmer. For now since the stocking will be relatively low I’ll continue to use my RedSea RSK300. Once that is no longer able to keep up, I’ll switch to a Nyos 220.

I currently have some new brightwell bricks being cycled in my sump to help with getting the new tank rolling.

I will be using my Apex and trident along with the addition of a couple DOS pumps and a second energy bar 832.

I ordered a breakout box so I can have manual push button feeding, cabinet lighting using the DC 24 port, and BOB with magnetic switches), A float switch to shut my skimmer off, a switch for maintenance mode, and any other uses that come to mind

Heat will be handled by 2 600w BRS heater's with 2 ink bird controllers (1 for each). This is a redundancy to the heater control settings with the Apex.

I’ve made some CAD files of my plans for the controller cabinet based off dimensions provided by other reefers with the same tank. The plan is to have the controller cabinet as 2 parts. The face will house all the controllers, and it will swing open on door hinges to gain access to the back where there will be cable race ways, 2 DOS pumps, 3 of the BRS Space saver jugs,(EDIT: The dosing containers will be installed temporarily in the cabinet. I am building custom dosing containers to go in my fish closet where I will install neptune DOS pumps and RO lines through the walls) 2 EB832’s and a rack built for the power supplies. The trident will be mounted to the exterior over hanging the split sump portion of the S-1000 that I will be utilizing as a fuge. I plan to build the cabinet out of 1/2” expanded PVC to eliminate any concern of moisture.

As I said above my plan is to build a hanging light fixture. RedSea sells a pendant but it looks a little cheap and doesn’t really leave room for changes. The bottom face will be mounted to rest of the fixture with threaded inserts and machine fasteners to make it easy to service. The idea is that I can either modify that panel or build a single replacement panel if my lighting plans every change in the future. It will be finished in satin clear to match the color of the cabinet.

I’m really looking forward to getting started on this and building something awesome.

Looks good, I would get a hybrid fixture if you plan on growing sps. The plans look amazing tho, good luck.
My plan is to start with mostly LPS, once I'm ready for SPS my plan is to either add XHO Strips or more hydras. This is one of the biggest reasons I wanted my canopy to be easily customized

It looks great, I did the hanging canopy as well and I use 4 ai 26hds. I use the hybrid fixture tho as my actual canopy and built a frame around the fixture so you can't see it. You'll be fine the way you're doing it, you can get the new xho add on but honestly you might be fine with 5 ai hydras to make a blanket of light, or get some primes to put between the 4 you have just to get some more par at the top of the water. I have a 6' tank and I see shading with 4 hydras, I use the t5s 3 hours a day to supplement for anything the hydras are missing. Hope I helped you at all, I just know that on a 6' you'll see the light spread and it'll probably bother you until you see the blanket of light.

how high are the hydras mounted? do you know what kind of par numbers you're getting? My plan was to have the lights 14" off the water per BRS recommendation on spread and adjust the output to get as even par as I can. Any insight you have on yours is welcome since its a similar size

With t5 at peak hours it's 350par at top of my rocks, and just hydras I have them at about 230par at top of rocks. I'll get more detailed photos when I'm home from work for you, I also can share my ai program with you if you're interested. It's basically brs recommend but more blues and I'm going for 18" off top of tank I believe, I'll take a detailed measurement when I get home as well, the setup does work great tho.

I’ve got the canopy almost completely finished. Just need to add the hardware for the hanging kit. I’ll need to reinforce the ceiling where it’s going to be mounted as well. The color I went with was Sherwin Williams Frost Flower. It matched the Red Sea cabinet really well at my LFS.

So yesterday I got an email from Red Sea saying that the new Reefer S tanks are available to preorder. I had planned on going with the 900 but couldnt resist going for the S-1000 and the opportunity to be close to the top of the waiting list especially since so many things are delayed and back ordered right now. So about 30 minutes after getting the email I was at my LFS and placed my order. I really like that its on an aluminum stand, and eurobraced. Although rimless is super clean, I like the added support and piece of mind of the brace. Tank should be here some time next month.

I also ordered 3 Reefwave 45's for flow in the new system. I have one more Reefwave 45 in my current tank that will move into the new one once its set up making it a total of 4. one on each side and 2 on the back.

I've been picking up plenty of other goodies for the tank over the last couple months. So far I've picked up the Hydra 32's, EB832, Breakout Box with some accessories for in cabinet lighting, feed mode buttons, etc, Some of the rock, couple hundred feet of RO tubing to run to my mixing closet for dosing/awc, and a couple other odds and ends. Still need to order more rock to make a NSA scape, and some other little bits.

The old tank has successfully been moved to the dining room in order to make room for the new S-1000. I made a quick pvc structure to hang my lights from rather then remounting the old canopy and putting holes in my dining room wall.

I’ll be hanging the canopy for the S-1000 this weekend and running some of the tubing/wiring through the walls soon.

I installed the wall plate for the light wiring to exit. The wire is dressed in white tech flex to look nice. It will be invisible from almost every viewing position. Right now the canopy is a couple inches higher then it will end up being to avoid me walking into it. This weekend I’ll be running 500ft of ro tubing, a 75 foot aquabus cable, and some more wiring to the closet I keep my water in. Eventually it will be used for all my dosing, AWC, ato, and any other future needs that may come up. It’s easier to just run it all now and connect to it when the time comes

Managed to run all the dosing lines, aquabus, and wiring through the walls to the closet storing my water and eventually where all my dosing will come from.

I ran a total of 12 dosing lines.
1.AWC In
2. AWC Out
3. RODI top up
4. Alk
5. Cal
6. Mag
7,8,9,10 Trace Elements
11. Coral amino
12. Extra

I also ran 5 Sets of 2 conductor wiring that can be used for extending things like the energy bar DC24v outputs, 1link cables, or any additional electronics.
I ran the wiring for the canopy down at the same time. There are 4 additional sets of wire up in the canopy for any changes made to my lighting in the future
