Reef Safe (Kinda) Angelfish: What are your favorites & how did they do long term?

No. I have flame in one tank and coral beauty in another. Neither bother coral. You can try adding nori seaweed or grazer block to keep it occupied and away from coral

He won’t touch nori and he is destroying my trachy it’s insane how he picks at the expensive peices but leaves the rest alone

I have a flame angel (model citizen) and a multibar angel (acan eater). Spike, my multibar has eaten a couple small acan frags, but he’s left alone everything else including lobos and trachys.

One thing that helps are good “coral guards” I have seven azure damsels in my 200 gallon sps tank. They have divided the tank into seven equal territories and will chase off any angel that lingers too long in their turf, keeping snacking to a minimum

Smart but I doubt they’ll swim near the corals I want them at plus I’ve had them before they’re spawns of satan

He’s nipping at 3 corals a monti trachy and a jack o lantern coral whatever that is this sucks I gotta catch him

Azure damsels aren’t too bad if the tank is big and there are enough to spread there mild to moderate aggression around. I have had my seven for over three years with no losses. They squabble a bit but nothing sustained. They do hunker in among the sps and live rock crevices. They themselves never touch the coral but if one of my angels settles in for a long snack they will chase them out

Sadly no real sps in my tank...never works out

Favorite personality of all angels I've kept was a very large French I had in a Caribbean mixed reef. 16" saucer, and he would let you scratch him while in the tank.

Totally agree on a French angel...I really want to take the chance. I keep reading hoping someone has found a way to distract them or just avoid certain corals.

I kept him with all Caribbean corals, so not too many meaty LPS. They need a HUGE tank, tho. I wish I had kept more pics of him, he was an absolute pig.

My favorite angels are tied between Rusty, Singapore and Potters, I've never had either but it's looking like Potters are a no-go now that Hawaii banned collection. A good ol' fashioned Coral Beauty is another favorite, once again never owned one.
The one angelfish I did own barely counts, it was a tiny Rusty angel that I got several months ago. After acclimating, I but her in a breeder box for a few days to my tangs could see her, and afterwards introduced her to the tank. But the second she plopped out of the net, my Orangline tang went berserk on it and mutilated it completely. It was shocking since he paid no heed to the angel until I added her in, and he didn't react at all when I added two more tangs after the event. He didn't even fight with my most recent addition, a Coraline Rabbitfish. It's the weirdest thing lol.

I may try to find another tiny rusty some day, if they are ever captive bred I would probably get one of those. But at this point, I have so much LPS that I may not want to risk it.

I would have to say the Lamarck Angel for they are reef safe. Have not had any problems with it nipping at corals and is a model citizen.

Have had good luck with my Flame. Have had him for over 4 years now without issues.

I have a Flame angel, a goldflake and a female bellus angel....no issues on any of them in my SPS dominated tank, (mixed with frogspawn, hammers, torches and other LPS and softies).

Anyone know how the Kingi Angels are with corals? Every video I see of them they're in these massive mixed reefs.

I have a few of them, along with a Regal, and wondering if there is anything I can put in with them to start.

It might be tough because I also have a Linespot Trigger, Niger Trigger, and Dogface Puffer...

As far as large angels go he's a model citizen a year in, in that it's tasted everything but killed nothing.

I've never had a dwarf that didn't nip a bunch except in certain circumstances.

Things that helped me:
1) a dominant fish that keeps them on their toes and moving about the tank. Or enough subservient fish to chase and assert dominance over.

2) nori in a clip that makes it hard for them to get it all at once, they go back to it all day long to try and get the last bits.

3) a place to put corals that suddenly become objects of affection. If they de-stress and stop giving off slime, etc. from being attacked the angel often will leave alone when reintroduced to a new spot.

4) corals that are larger than frags will help tolerate the blows better and potentially stimulate new tip growth from the abuse on sps.
