I was at HFT today and bought long reach straight and curved pliers and long reaching vise grips to fix a short in my DIY T5 dimmable ballasts. I have to reach way back into a tight spot.

Found these on Amazon. Wye adapter for Reefer outlet nozzle. Spreads out the return water. And a waterproof Wi-Fi Endoscope. It’s a tiny camera that you can get into remote, tight spaces, in or out of water. I was originally looking for something to view into a tight space to fix my DIY ballasts and run across this. I was finding all kinds of expensive remote automotive cameras and almost gave up. Although this is only one notch above a toy I might be able to search for things in my tank or sump that could be impossible otherwise. There is a ring of LEDs around the lens and the imaging is viewable on a smart phone.

My numerous plumbing fails. These are various glue job assemblies that either I just wasn’t happy with or they just couldn’t possibly work. I removed all the salvageable parts and I will have to junk what’s left. What a waste. Just the shipping alone was considerable.

Filled with water to leak test the stock unions and glued adapters on my UV sterilizer. The top fittings which are the UV’s output are definitely leaking with a slow steady drip but not exactly sure if it’s the threads or the glue seal. And also not sure if the input fittings on the bottom are leaking either with the threads or the glued seal. I had to cut the experiment short to clean up the water puddle and then dinners ready.

There’s a narrow space on the right side of the end of the 250’s cabinet that’s chocked full of electronic equipment to control pumps, lights, and other equipment. This all naturally gets warm as it uses electricity and I’ll have to cool that narrow space since heat will get trapped there. The doors of the stand almost close off the front of this space so three cooling methods come to mind. Use fan(s) to blow the hot air out. Use ventilation holes on the doors to dissipate heat. Or just leave the doors off the stand altogether. Without a method to deal with the heat equipment could be damaged or worst case cause a fire. Top photo shows how packed the electronic equipment is in the narrow space. Bottom photo is a metal sheet screen I could put over square holes in doors that’s decorative if I go for holes.

Meet the:

If you saw the last episode of Neptune Systems: Let’s Talk Reef with Terence Fuggazi on YouTube, you would have caught this exciting new invention, but I’ll fill you in if you didn’t see it. The owner of Vivid Creative Aquatics came up with a shield that slips over the end of a NS salinity probe and has a John Guest fitting attached to the SPS to provide a water supply through a 1/4” OD hose. The water coming through the device pushes water out the end of the shield where the tip of the probe is inside. The water supply provides the probe with fresh system water for an accurate parameter reading and at the same time pushes out and away from the tip of the salinity probe all micro air bubbles. Genius

Has anyone knocked off one of these little cletes from the bottom of a Reefer stand? I just did while lifting the stand up and onto a table with my dad. The stand scraped the edge of the table and bent the little nail that holds the thing on. However Red Sea has a new website that sells a lot of Reefer parts you can’t find from other vendors. The hard part will be to tip the stand completely on its front to replace it.

Since I switched skimmers I decided to sell it and a couple other things to get my credit cards paid off. I have a back up COR pump but it’s a COR-20 and my stand by is a COR-15. The 20 has a different driver with a separate power supply that’s not compatible with the 15 so I decided to sell it. A guy PMed me asking if I wanted to trade my COR-20 driver and power supply for his COR-15 driver and I said heck yes. I’m also selling my chiller.

I came up with another place I could put my UV. On the side of my CO2 scrubber. The Trident goes on top.

Harry of Harry’s Aquatics makes a cooling fan with a 3D printed housing powered by an Apex 24V accessory port. I’m going to put one here to draw heat out of the tight space with the electronics.

Bought this from @Gotfrogs through Etsy. Custom Break-out-Box for Apex. Has illuminated toggle switch that illuminates cover. Three illuminated switch buttons down the side with pictures from top to bottom: spigot with drop of water, power button symbol, and a little shrimp guy I’ll use for feed mode. Underside has two inputs for wired switches like magnetic door switches or liquid float level switches. The unit connects to a PM1 or PM2 through a DIN cable. However to illuminate the buttons, toggle switch, and also to allow the toggle switch to operate, this BoB needs a 12V DC power source. The lights on it are bright and it makes a beautiful display but photo came out blurry. I had this mounted in the 170 cabinet but I’m moving to the IKEA. I plan to use the toggle switch for the EMERGENCY switch. It shuts off all pumps in case of an emergency!!!

Adaptive Reef finally came out with their inline pipe probe holder 6 months after their announcement. That’s ok VCA’s SPS (salinity probe shield) solved the problem I was having with my my probe mounting. The question is which product is better at keeping micro bubbles out of the probes’ tips, that is if you have room for the AR holder.

Did a little more equipment layout rearranging tonight. Main thing I accomplished was check for the electrical short in the T5 harness. I used an electrical conductivity checker and it seems alright. Glad to get the doubt out of the way. I went ahead and bought a custom built cooling fan from Harry’s Aquatics. And a Kasa 3 plug outlet from Amazon.

They are always coming up with some cool stuff! I might have to look into that. I've been lucky with mine so far but I know it's only a matter of time.

Lol it's disgusting what my spare plumbing parts inventory looks like.

@Rob.bucek yeah I love their Random Flow Generators. When your salinity probe is in the skimmer chamber it's only a matter of time before micro bubbles get in there. I'm wondering if micro bubbles affect pH and ORP probes too. I might have to get shields for those. I could run a 1/4" RO tubing manifold off a PMUP and shield all three probes.

@Rob.bucek I've taken a new approach to plumbing. I only order 4 or 5 fittings at a time. I plumb them and set aside the pieces i find I don't need. Repeat. After doing this three or four times I send back the fittings I don't need for a refund. BRS has a good policy on fittings returns, a good selection, and good prices too.

I have my screws in where my 5” BRS reactor goes. I have it hanging there and need to plumb it. I’m going to power it with a pMUP and monitor it with a 1/2” flow sensor. When the flow slows down considerably I’ll know the sponge pads are clogged.

FYI, with a heat gun (or patience & hair dryer) you might be surprised how many of those pvc fittings can be rescued. Maybe not all, but things are relatively easy to separate with the proper application of heat.

@Beau_B lol after I threw it all away I ran across a YouTube video on how to do just that!! Maybe I’ll try next time. Looks like the heat acts like WD-40!
