ReefWave 45 vs. VorTech MP60 on a 900 3XL

What option would your choose for a Red Sea 900 3XL SPS/mixed reef?

  • Two MP60s on the same end (Reef Crest Anti Sync) and two MP40s on the back wall.

I never had a gyre before, currently running 4 MP40s on each end of my 750XXL. I’m upgrading to a SPS mixed reef 900 3XL and I’d rather not have two pumps on one of the viewing sides, the other side I don’t mind if there is equipment.

I’m thinking of the following options:
1. Two MP60s on the same end (Reef Crest Anti Sync) and possibly two MP40s on the back walls. This would be one of the best options for viewing from the side.
2. Two MP60s on opposite ends (Reef Crest Anti Sync) and possibly two MP40s on the back walls.
3. Two ReefWave 45s mounted horizontal on opposite ends (Anti Sync)
4. Two ReefWave 45s mounted vertical on the sides of the overflow. This would be another good viewing option for the one side.

All suggestions and comments appreciated!

I went with 1 ReefWave 45 on each side and 4 MP40’s mounted on the back wall for my 8' bare bottom tank. ReefWaves run at 80% random anti sync

Are you happy with the ReefWaves so far?

Very happy with them, I wasn’t expecting much from them on an 8 foot tank but they are silent. At 90-100% flow gets a little insane for the first 2 feet lol

I'm running two Reefwave 45's on a Reefer Peninsula 500 (105g DT) mounted vertically on the overflow wall and these things are beasts that are virtually silent. I can only run at 40% or else it's just too much flow. Mounted vertically, it's great to be able to direct the top & bottom independently, so it's almost like having four heads. I've never run MP60's so no basis of comparison.

I'm sure you know this, but I wouldn't put too much stock in polls for equipment comparison. I think people vote based on what they have (i.e., loyalty & validation to/for what they own) vs. any sort of objective, independent evaluation.

Are you out on Tuzne? Massive flow that you can point and direct. Tunze 6255 moves more water than a mp60 in my tanks. The things last longer than anything else, too.
