So I'm thinking of setting up a lowboy frag tank with no sump attached, just internal pumps, lights, skimmer, doser, and maybe a hang on back filter. Wondering if anybody thinks this is a bad idea like one that will likely result in problems down the road

I ran sumpless for years. Should be fine if you keep the filters clean.

Purplelobst92 did you set this system up? I am planning my LowBoy setup now an am planning on going sumpless as well.
I did set the system up and it runs well, but I did end up using a sump... its much easier and def worth the investment. What i used for my 60 gallon frag sump is a 20 gallon "Botanicare Hydroponic reservoir" which has worked out really well for me because i had a large space to put my bio bricks, large heater, large skimmer, and my DC return pump and what not. The hydro res is built of flexible durable plastic and is very shallow its also very light which makes maintenance a breez.
