Hi All I have changed the carbon in my reactor yesterday it’s been in there for about two months a long time I know I have noticed rust coming out of some of the carbon would this be due to me leaving it in there such a long time
Out of curiosity I ran a magnet over some new carbon and it’s stuck to it indicating metal in the carbon can anyone guide me on this thanks 33DEE679-53CF-4E78-BDF3-B0A634959C38.jpeg B8587523-5CBA-4C57-B439-C4DFA323228B.jpeg BB4D7C02-24F9-4622-AA11-E14FB6969EC1.jpeg

I am far from an expert and would suggest you ask your question in the Chemistry forum.

For what it is worth:
The "carbon" we use in our hobby may contain iron which can oxidize and rust. [https://sites.pitt.edu/~cejones/GeoImages/5SedimentaryRocks/ClasticSedRocks/Coal.html] Using high grade "carbon" should eliminate the problem. I use and recommend Premium ROX 0.8 Aquarium Carbon from Bulk Reef Supply [https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/bulk-premium-rox-0-8-aquarium-carbon.html]

As you pointed out, 2 months is too long to go before changing out. Aquarium Carbon has a useful life of 3 to 4 weeks typically.

Same thing just happened to me with the same exact carbon, I keep the bag in a filter sock and when cleaning the socks I noticed the same rust looking spots coming from the carbon bag.
Did you ever figure out anything?
