Hello everyone

I wanted to ask what type of mushroom is the safest, generally smallest type of mushroom that is least likely to to eat small fish or inverts. I read that rhodactis are prone to this, what about discosoma or ricordea?

I wouldn't risk it with ricordea, they are very sticky and have ravenous appetites. Discosoma would be the best bet with small fish like gobies, but honestly rhodactis wouldn't be much of a risk as long as you make sure to get safe ones. The piscivorous ones have longer, smoother tentacles, while the safe ones have tiny, matted tentacles (the bounce mushrooms are this type of rhod).
Good luck and God bless.

In 25+ years in this hobby I haven’t seen a healthy goby fall prey to a mushroom. Maybe one of the larger tentacled mushrooms, but not a discosoma or ricordea in my opinión.

Gotcha. As with many things in our aquariums, there's a possibility they can kill or eat something else. I don't know of anyone who has had a healthy fish eaten by a mushroom. My dottyback sleeps on a rock of 40-50 rhodis.

There is a very minor chance, but not enough to not get mushrooms.

Wow this is the first I'm hearing that a mushroom can sting and eat a fish. I have a ricordea garden in my nano with a few small fish. Should I get rid of them now lol

Its probably less the sting and just the fact a ground dwelling fish could rest on a slowly closing mushroom and get digested lol

Its the only thread I can find where a discosoma is the culprit though, I‘m torn. It seems really unlikely to happen
