I am currently looking to set up a RO/DI storage and salt mixing station in my house and I'm interested in the way other folks are doing it. So if you have any good photos of your systems don't be shy lets see them.

I'm using buckets too, but with a 90 gallon tank and a 35 gallon sump I'm changing out 15 to 20 gallons at a time. that is 4 buckets, 4 heaters, and 4 pumps. I would love to eliminate some equipment and free up some space.

40 Gallon Vertical Tank (18"dia x 43" ht)

Here is what I was looking at. If I could build a stand to hold one of these 40 gallon tanks up hight enough to have a 2nd tank under the top one then that would be the best thing for the space that I have to do this in.

I'm thinking that the top tank would hold the RO/DI water and the bottom one would be for mixing salt. I'm not real sure about how to plumb it together.

We have a two 55G barrels setup this way. An auto topoff keeps the top barrel full of fresh water. A bulk head is in the bottom of the top barrel with valve that we open to fill the bottom barrel as needed for salt water mix up.

Is your fresh water barrel below or above the sump? If its above, are you using some type of solenoid to stop the water from dumping all in the sump?

here is mine... the barrel on the left is saltwater and the one on the right is fresh water...both barrels contain float switches to auto fill the barrels and the saltwater i have a shut off valve to dissconnect it from the water source once mixed...also the saltwater barrel contains a skimmer pump with venturi to keep the water mixed and aireated which is set on a timer to run 5 min every hour....:) pretty simple and easy to do..just set and forget...also they sit on a 18" platform so i can just throw a bucket under it and fill with a pvc valve.... the valves were installed in the bottom of the barrel with uniseals....

Here is my water station (and cooling station). I have a 100gpd 5 Stage AquaFX tied into this.

I use buckets...simple and cost effective..I have a 60 gallon system so the water change demand is not much.

I think as systems get bigger then you might have to think of a system that does it for you.

Here's mine.... 25g poly container, Velocity T4 I had laying around to mix, fill with water, add salt, plug in for a few hours, let it cool down (The T4 adds alot of heat, Its the reason its not on a tank anymore) and change out the water.....

I just use Brute trash cans. I have one up on a stand off the floor drilled with a bulkhead for a drain. I have a float valve in it to cut off RO. Then I have another trash can on wheels to put the fresh water in to mix with salt

I am currently designing one right now on paper. SO far it will be 2 barrel sized containers on stair stepped stilts. RO reservoir on top, then the salt mix container with a beast of a pump to heat the water, then it will have 2 outlets. one into my main sump and the other for if i need buckets of water. I will have a seperate ATO container so I do not have issues down the road getting tangled in all the tubing because Im good like that and will cause some type of disaster.

The ATO will be also the same level as the salt container but will only be 5 gallons. It will have a spout from the Reservoir I will manually fill just to be safe.

HOPEFULLY haha. Still tinkering around but that would be ideal for me. MOstly gravity and little mechanics have helped me so far with the tanks I have, so this should come out smooth as well

I use a large brute with the castors installed. When I'm ready to make saltwater I roll it over to the RO/DI under the sink to fill up. After its full I roll it over to the same room as the aquarium and drop in a heater and pump to mix. Then it's just drain the tank and pump in the new

In my opinion this should be as robust as possible to give you options. My system has 2 different configurations....

A) A Renew continuous water changing system
B) The ability to mix 55 gallons and bring it on-line after draining 55 gallons of existing tank water
C) The ability to draw buckets of RO/DI water or Saltwater

You run the system in either configuration (but not both) but the beauty is you never have to touch a bucket. In addition, my sink has it's own RO/DI spiget on the sink for cleaning the test vials. We are not up and running with this sytem yet. However, I designed the system to be as automated or as manual as I need. I plan on running it 99% of the time using the Renew water changing system.

Here are some pics.... It's hard to photograph because it's in a fish room and located behind the 400 gallon display. Here are my best attempts at pics....
