No matter how long you have been in reefing, there will always be that ONE THING that is seems like everyone does or knows about, but you just do not get it. Maybe it's a piece of knowledge or a practice that doesn't make sense, or maybe it's something that you don't see as beneficial. Let's chat about it!

P.S. As always, remember this can be an opinion based conversation, let's keep it cool. :zipper-mouth-face:

I don’t understand why many (hobbyist) Reefers overcomplicate things. Perhaps either they really enjoy over thinking, or someone convinced them it was necessary.

I'll start. I may offend some people: Gem Tangs.

I feel like they aren't as popular as they once were, but even still, I don't get it. They're expensive and they ain't even that cute.

I have never understood kalk dosing, either!
That's fair. And for me, it would begin the thought, wondering why a seemingly easy and cheap approach to maintaining calcium carbonate levels isn't promoted as a viable way to maintain a tank.

Of course most of my hypothesis would revolve around the idea that no one can really monitize it.

Not to get stuck on a particular idea or product or fish. I think marketing really steers our thoughts.

Couldn't agree more. Why is it that the "best" of everything is crazy expensive when there are 80% as good alternatives for half the cost? We live in the age of "influencers."

I think it’s the high stakes nature of the hobby. If you read you need to do 11 things perfectly to keep your tank running, and it works, you’re terrified of dropping even one of those 11 balls because the cumulative effect is what keeps your tank healthy, in your mind. And few hobbyists want to play mad scientist with their tank as the potential casualty, so they don’t want to tinker with a working formula, even if their only understanding of it comes from the anecdotal support of other hobbyists.

I should start selling aquarium crystals that help stabilize pH when hung within 6 feet of a reef tank. Just test your parameters and adjust accordingly, but the crystal will help your test kits work more accurately.

I’m a scientist by training. Several years ago I worked with this one guy who was the expert on a very particular technique. When he trained new people on it, he would rub a red feather he had hung over a tissue culture hood. Most of his trainees, despite knowing better and understanding the science behind the method would rub the darn red feather whenever running it. Brings a smile to my face every time I think about it. Human beings are creatures of habit and deconstructing myth from fact is hard. Us reefers just do the best we can.

Kalk.

One table spoon of Kalkwasser in a RODI container for a specific strenght but it's based on my evaporation rate and my KH consumption rate or IDK I don't get it guys.

YES...this right here!! This is me all day when it comes to Kalk.
In addition, what others have mentioned about it being a cheaper "all in one" dosing product but the industry cannot find a way to monetize it. I have seen alot of super successful tanks using kalk, I just wish I could grasp the process...LOL

over testing i test once to make sure the cycle is complete and I let natural ques help determine how far my tank is ( I also test is stuff goes wrong ofc) but over testing plus test kits are expensive
