So what's happening is your urchin is getting full and then holding a snack for later, innovative!
Sack lunch. It's frugal.
So in retrospect, if you get the right type of pencil urchin you may have a good boy. They don't carry stuff, just bulldoze. The wrong type of pencil urchin and you've got yourself a softie/lps muncher.
I got the wrong one.

Get a tuxedo. I see all sorts of people complaining about long spine urchins or the larger ones, never have any issues with my tuxedo, other than he picks up small snails.

My tuxedo was just as bad as my purple spined at picking up things and ate significantly less algae, kind of the worst of both worlds for me. But they sure look cool

I've had exclusively longspines for the past three years. Partly because my diadema have never rearranged things, although they will occasionally poke something.
