right on, thank you everyone for you answers, i love that i can always count on you all. im able to make some much needed purchases for my tank today so i am really excited. now a second question - what with the controller on my gyres completely shot, is there a brand y'all recommend? should i do gyre or wavemakers? I know jebao makes good and affordable stuff, but i want to see what everyone else thinks.
Jebao is affordable but i have really only liked the Gyre. And sizing for your tank can be a little of a bear...to little or too much some times. for example i ordered the scp 70 and should have got the 90 or 120. For pumps the MP's have really been the way to go, but expensive.

Orlushy dc-9000 for return pump on 120

I agree. I like the affordability of the Jebao Gyre. I have owned most of them CP-10, SCP-90, SCP 120, SCP-150, and now SCP-180. I always go 1 size up from what I need.

hey friends, so i need some help - up until now i have been using my API test kit for most things (i know, definitely not great). I have salifert phosphate and calcium tests, but i would love to know which tests i should order today and which brand would you recommend? maybe like the top three/most important?
Mine are Trident, Hanna and salifert.

Tridents reads low on Alk, but good on Ca and Mag
Hanna for Alk, Nitrate and phosphate. Hanna reads high on Alk
Salifert for Alk, Ca, and Mag. Alk usually dead center between Trident and Hanna. Ca and Mag pretty much matches Trident.

What is the size for a standard 120-gallon?
48'x24"x24"
For my 65 gal heavy sps dominant (36"x18x24), I have SCP-120 on one end and the other is an slw-30. For my 180 (72"x24"x24") lps and softies, I have SCP-180 on one end near the torches at 30-40% pwr on W1 mode. I have a cp-40 on 50% pwr on the other end because I don't want to blast the gonis. I also have mp40 I can add to the back wall if I need to. So, it depends on what corals you have.

i have a 72"x18"x24" 125 gallon. so with that length gyres seem to be the way to go probably, huh?

i have a few torches, but for the most part the rest are all softies (mushrooms, zoas, leathers, toadstools).

I have 2 scp 70's and believe I want scp 120x2 turned down for my 120gallon.
The SCP-180 would be too much. Not much price difference between 120 and 150. If it was me, I would get 2 150, and turn it down to fit your needs

Thanks, I need to hear that a lot. Trying to take care of one wounded duck and neglecting the flock got me in trouble.
I set my tank up for whats best for acros and then put the torches and goni in places which best fit their needs, inside my particular tank.
Torches on the bottom and Goni also on the bottom, but in a little bit of a shaded area and protected from too much flow.

Not really, one running at 30% and the other running at 70%.
I was talking about the 7 watt jump from 70 to 90. and then a whopping 15 watt jump after that. I know they can be turned down but my return pump (36w) doesn't even pull that much. 18 to 25 to 40watts

Did the same, but as I got more Acro’s I needed to start increasing the light because some were being positioned lower than anticipated. That’s when I started frying the non Acro’s close to the bottom. Time will tell if they can handle it, but I have to support the Acro’s.

I'll also add I tried a 150 on it and it was just too much. For an Acro only tank it probably would be fine. Or maybe depending on rockwork or placement. I didn't play with it much and stuck with the 120.

Exactly. If you like acros the best, just focus on them. If you can find some shade / overhangs for the non-acros, that’s good.
