I love alage barn but shipping is a killer! I understand I can grow my own phytoplankton fairly easely, ultimately I’d like to grow it under my stand and dose a several ml to my tank every night. What do I need to know?

I initially bought the following listed below and few items that I already have- airline tubing, small pump and couple clean empty 8oz water bottles for the culture and grow LED light- https://www.amazon.com/ACKE-Spectru...515545165&sr=1-4&keywords=acke+led+grow+light

https://www.amazon.com/Live-Marine-...qid=1515543931&sr=8-16&keywords=phytoplankton

https://www.amazon.com/Hydro-Algal-...&qid=1515543989&sr=1-3&keywords=f2+fertilizer

https://www.amazon.com/JW-Pet-Compa...TF8&qid=1515544567&sr=1-1&keywords=gang+valve

Using the empty water bottle with few holes on top- one hole that could fit a airline tubing. I took about half a cup of the Phytoplankton then add about a tb of the F2 fertilizer and about 2-3 cups of saltwater with 1.020 salinity, give it a good shake then light it up for about 14-16 hours. Once it turns dark green, you have your Phytoplankton ready. Mine takes about 4-5 days.

If this isn't helpful, there are few vids that I watched in youtube.

It’s not as easy as that. It depends on the pstrain you are growing. The specific gravity as well as other specific environmental conditions are somewhat different for each species. Entirely different. I’ve been growing several different strains of Phytoplankton. They are not all green. Some are different beautiful hues. There is a book that is very informative if you were going to start grilling phytoplankton. I would suggest getting it before you start anything and read it through to find what strains you actually need. They all have different nutritional profile’s and all are used for different reasons. When talking about Phytoplankton, you should talk about why you are using that particular species. I think that would be more informative to people than just naming some statistics and parameters without naming specific species.
If you’re thinking of growing phytoplankton, I would order all of my source cultures from Florida Mariculture. They are the original founders of aquaculture for the home hobbyist and more. The founder of Florida Mariculture is the author of many of the books that we use in this hobby for years. You should order a book called The Plankton Culture Manual, sixth edition.

I shared the method that is working for me and hope others got something out of it.

Your are welcome to post your procedures here rather than pointing out that mine is not right.
