Really confused here. My tank is about 5 months old and I added some chaeto to the sump about 2 days ago. Diatoms are coming out of no where starting yesterday evening and now covering everything. Already had a diatom bloom during cycling, and some brown cyano that covered everything. Both went away in about 10 days and didn’t come back at all. Other than that:
120g tank
~0.2 nitrates (Using Red Sea and there’s barely any pink at all)
0.21 phosphates (they have slowly been going down from .55...)
0 ammonia/nitrite
Alk 9.4
Salinity 1.024
Temp 79
Not sure else would be helpful to know

I haven’t tested these after adding the chaeto, but could it have thrown something off? Everything else has been extremely stable for the past couple of months. I also added a BTA last night, about when the bloom started (great timing), but I assume that can’t have anything to do with it?

Are you sure it's diatoms and not dinos?

Yes it’s just fuzzy dusty brown stuff, no bubbles or stringy bits.

I thought I remember there being a correlation between low nutrient levels and diatom blooms. Maybe adding the chaeto dropped nutrient levels?
