Setting up QT?

Hi peps, I'm going to set up a QT after having tank set up for 3 years I've just been doing it on a wing and a prey that nothing goes wrong. I set up a tropical tank for my mum which lasted all of about 2mins so I was thinking of using it for a qt tank. It's only about 25ltrs and It has a large canister filter. I was talking to the LFS near me and he said putting a medium-large fish in a tank that size would stress it out more then putting straight into my DT what do you guys think? The other things was what the best way to sterilise the filter media in the canister filter or is it best to get new? The hardest thing will be convincing my wife to let me have another tank in the house any help with that will also be appreciated[emoji2]
