I've had a 1 ounce ball of Chaeto in my sump for 6 weeks now. The Chaeto hasn't grown noticeably, but my refugium now has green hair algae all over. Is this normal? I just ordered 4 more ounces of chaeto, hoping to reduce nitrates and phosphates through the chaeto.

I got GHA after buying Chaeto as well not sure if it’s a hitchhiker thing or the tank normalizing but just don’t overfeed and gha should go through it’s phase and make sure you have a nice refugium light, what’s your nitrate/phosphate at?

Anecdotally I feel like GHA can grow faster than chaeto when nutrients are “suddenly available. However once established the chaeto seems to be better at up-taking them consistently ie keeping GHA at bay in the tank.
However one round of over feeding and it is more likely that GHA will grow to uptake the difference-then die back again.

this is just my experience
