This is my 180 gallon discus tank. No canopy, but the stand was built from a picture I saw.

Wanted to have a tank that blended into a room and looked like it belonged. I decided to finish the basement this winter and used that as an apportunity to buil my dream tank. I got my 100lb of live rock in yesterday, clearly not enough so I'll be placing another order tonight!

Here is our work in progress. Made from 100% repurposed wood :)

We sanded, painted, sanded, and stained each individual piece for this project.

We haven't done the canopy yet...waiting till we are ready to mount the light.

The stand is nearly 4' wide x 4' tall x 30" deep and is being built for a 60gl cube

This is a built in 90 Gal with corner overflow we had custom built when we remodeled our kitchen
IMG_4614.JPG
The back side is a little shorter to hide the corner overflow. We finished it to match the wall of the entry hall.

The canopy has a temperature and humidistat that turns on an exhaust fan that vents through the attic. Also has a fresh air intake on the opposite side of the fan. We added blackouts to hide the light from the gaps in the inset doors when they are shut. Also the inside of the canopy has been laminated in plastic the same as countertops.

All of the plumbing goes to the basement. I have a large UPS that is usually under the tank here but I pulled it out to change out the batteries.

Here's my canopy/cabinet. The stand is the regular oceanic stand. I designed the rest to be built around the existing tank, which has been running for 13 years. All water containers, RO, new SW, and autotopoff resevoir live in the cabinet to the left of the display. First image shows 3D rendering of the design, followed by images of the actual unit.

My redo:
2x6 top frame, doubled front beam, 3/4" plywood top.
2x4 ladder frame for bottom, 1/2" plywood top.
White Formica laminate on both tops.
1/2" plywood back & sides.

Painted & ready to go in:

And with panels put on - resting on trim and held to stand by magnets:

WOW, I am going to build a new stand for my 150g with my son. After seeing all of these I am not sure I am up to the task of making it look so good. This will be my first stand, any suggestions?

Draw it out in detail. Plan plan plan. Don't settle for anything but perfect square cuts from your tools. Double check that everything is square, plumb and level. Making the top & bottom frames perfectly square can be surprisingly difficult. Any other tips depend on how you plan to build it. 2x4 and 2x6 lumber MUST be kiln dried. Pick the straightest ones you can find (I went through 20-30 boards to find a few good ones. If possible, joint and plane them into perfection. Everything goes better if you do.

Thank you. I want to replace the stand on my 150g reef tank. The tank is w=48" x d=24" x h=30". I did a rough estimate based on the strength of wood and found that 2x4's should be strong enough to build the stand without a center brace. What do you guys think? I also want to make it taller than what I have. It is currently 29" and I want to raise it to 36". That will give me more room inside for my equipment.

I'd suggest starting your own thread in this "DIY" section - we're kinda hijacking this one! But no - a 2x4 isn't good enough for a 48" span with that much weight.
