So... could someone explain this?

I've had this single fish for over a year, with no other cardinal fish and today I happened to catch the following scene:

A tumbleweed of eggs rolling across the sand, about the size of a marble; 20+ eggs. The cardinal swooped down and sucked them up, now holding them in its mouth for the past 20min.

I didn't see where the eggs came from.

He is in a temporary setup rather than DT due to disease outbreak (no CUC or other life) having completed 2 weeks of copper, and now 2 weeks observation

Other tankmates:
Linespot Flasher wrasse (male)
Carpenters Flasher wrasse (transitional)
Lubbock's Fairy wrasse (presumed male)
Copperband butterflyfish
Midas Blenny

Male dropping eggs? Not possible. Female laying and taking the brooding on duties her self? Aliens? Immaculate conception?
