Looking at getting a reef octopus but not sure what model as I think getting too big of one will prevent it from really working?

Looking at the Reef Octopus Classic 110-INT. Seems like a good size for the Innovative Marine 100 INT (about 86-100 gallons when factoring in rock and sand displacement, depending on the water level in the sump.)

Started to notice a film in my sump which is why I believe I need a skimmer. Any suggestions appreciated!

I have an IM 75 EXT with a total water volume of roughly 85-90 gallons. I have a reef octopus classic 150 that works very well on it. IMO the 110 will be undersized for your tank.

Thank you for this! I was thinking the same thing based on some additional research I’ve been doing today. I’m thinking either the 150 or 200. I’m expecting heavy bioload if not already experiencing it on the low end. If I get the 200 and find it to be oversized, I’m able to adjust it accordingly to properly function correct? Or am I mistaken? New to the hobby, and as a result protein skimmers in general lol.

If you are going to have a heavy bioload, I would say get the 200. I think that your water volume will be a bit more than you are anticipating. If I have 85-90 gallons with the IM 75, I think you will have closer to 105-120 ish.

I do not think you will find that it is oversized, it’s not like you will be using a skimmer meant for 300 gallons on a 100 gallon tank. But if you find that it is you can always just put it on a timer and cut down on the hours that you run it.

I have used reef octopus classic skimmers on many tanks and just love them. The most important thing to get them running at their best is to place them in the manufacturer suggested depth of water. If the water in the sump is too deep, you can place the skimmer on a stand. After that, it might take a few days to break in, but in my experience they are pretty darn consistent and reliable skimmers.

I have the Octo 200 Elite on a IM 100 EXT and the thing just never stops working. I do use the 0-10v control through my Hydros because it gives me 0-100% control over the pump. Doing this you can really get it dialed in. Without the 0-10v you basically have 5 speeds with the Octo Controller in 20% increments.

I saw the hydros and wasn't sure what all I could technically control with it. Any good guides on what some controllers can/can't do or a comparison chart?

Used an Apex A3 for a while then switched to Hydros. Don't want to make a comparison rant or start a fight here because they are both good systems. For me I prefer the Hydros and would never look back.
