I have a RedSea Max nano and the skimmer is awful. I was thinking about replacing it with a Aquamaxx HOB 1.5.
Does anyone know if this would be a good fit?

PS: all my corals died recently, due to my poor husbandry. I think skimming would help clean up the water, besides more waterchanges)

The aquamaxx is a great hob skimmer. Not sure if it fits or not, but it worked well on my jbj 30. Another good choice is the tunze 9004 or 9012. Not sure if they would fit in your rear compartments.
The tunze (if they fit) would be more low profile, but would take up one of the return chambers. The aquamaxx is quite a bit more obtrusive, but leaves your return chamber open for filtration / media / heater, etc.

I just need something that kicks butt, works well and easy to tune. I honestly don't care if it looks goofy at this point.

Did you ever find what worked best?

I do also have the same tank and problems with the skimmer after having it a year.
And need a kick butt skimmer too?
