New to the hobby and I think I got a little to trusting with a LFS.... bought a $10 frag and the guy said it was growing on a pebble. It’s clearly not a pebble once I got it home and was able to touch (with gloves). Feels spongy. Zoa polyps growing on it.

any guidance? What do I do?

Yes it's a sponge... you have few options. You can leave it to see if the zoas take over and kill it or vice versa (which I'm sure you don't want. You could remove the zoas from the plug (which I recommend any ways, pests like to come in on plugs) and remove the sponge from the zoa colony. If you decide to go this route make sure to wear gloves in case of palytoxins.

First coral, first time fragging. Thanks for the guidance. Split sponge onto a plug and zoas on another. Sponge was grown into some rock that was on the disc. Looks a little rough. Put it all back in the tank. I’ll update in a few days. Little nervous, wasn’t easy to frag so I home I don’t kill them!
