Today starts my favorite time of the year! October to January! (Yes, I'm that girl). And with the spooky season coming in full force, I can't help but think that our tanks have a lot in common with the Halloween season. Allow me to explain:
  1. Halloween can be associated with scary things, and so can our tanks...Tank leaks, dinos, disease...Oh My!
  2. Halloween is also associated with sweet things, and again, so is our tanks! Have you seen how cute gobies are? Doesn't get much sweeter than that.
  3. Just like kids run around the neighborhoods with bags full of candy, we reefers run around frag swaps with coolers full of live animals that resemble candy! And don't lie to yourselves...The resemblance is uncanny.
Just like there are two different ways people can perceive spooky season, scary or sweet, there are two different ways we can perceive our reefs...Trick or Treat?

Is your aquarium a trick or a treat?

My last tank I had as a kid was absolutely a treat, beautiful to look at with interesting predators, until I lost power during a blizzard, everything died, and the tank broke because it was in front of my window and the saltwater froze solid(sucks because it was a 180 gallon tank.) About 9 years later I am wanting to rebuild it now as an adult.

Wow. That HAD to stink when it thawed! Ironically enough, something similar happened to my old 29g in Jan of '95. We forgot to close the slider all the way and took off for a weekend. Only the Coral Banded Shrimp survived.

Never got the chance to find out, it was a solid block of ice so me and my brother just chucked it outside, but I imagine it would have stunk up my bedroom.

Most days, the coral on the farm is a great treat (to look at, don't eat the coral!)

Some days though, like today, the trick hits... The float valve on my RODI container decided that I needed a good mopping

My first reef tank since the mid 90's is both. I love getting up and seeing what new has appeared on the live rock. The trick is the live rock(yes, real live rock) introduced bryopsis. Gotta love it!

Definitely a treat the last few days. I'm about 13 months in and most things have been good, but I've been chasing cyano for a couple of months. That seems to have receded for the last week or so. Here it is today :)
