Hey guys,

Just looking for opinions. I’m going to be breaking down my 65 in preparation for a move. For temporary holding (12 months or so) I was initially looking at a 100 gallon stock tank. Currently, for the same price I can pick up a 60 gallon breeder at Petco. The stock tank would only be filled with about 60-70 gallons of water anyway, so for temporary holding (no formal aquascape or anything), would you do a 60 breeder or the 100 gallon stock tank?

For those wondering, why not just use my 65, well it’s reef ready and this tank will be sitting on the floor off the to the side out of the way (won’t quite work with a reef ready system).

I have a couple thoughts, though I'd differ to @fishguy242 at the end of the day :)

What livestock are you trying to preserve? You have a 65 gallon DT now, would a 40 breeder not suffice as a temporary home? I believe that's about 20 bucks cheaper than a 60 breeder at PetCo who currently has their 50% off sale going on.

A stock tank is a great idea when it's the less expensive option. But if a stock tank will cost the same as a 60B, and more than a 40B, I'd be tempted to get a tank. Keep it for future use as a quarantine tank for when you get new fish. Or, sell it off as lightly used. It would be A LOT easier to rehome/sell a real tank rather than a stock tank.

As always, just my $0.02, I hope that helps, and wish you the best of luck!

All good points! I was just noticing that the OP had a 65, and was going to setup the 65 again, so is a 100 gallon stock tank just a bit overkill here? Otherwise, absolutely everything you just mentioned.

Nope, perfect for a tank move, future use , no worries about volume at any time.
40 would have to monitor closely compared to 75 gal of water.
