Yeah...... I would feel the same if it were my fish as I really want them to live decades. And I know a fish like Clowns are capable of living 20+, even 30+ years.

Was there any aggression?
No aggression or anything ever. No crabs. No predators in tank. Fat and happy. When I got home I knew something was wrong because she wasn't swimming in her normal area.

:( Would be interesting to look into fish strokes. I wonder if anyone’s done research on it. How old was the female?
She was about 10. My wife is a veterinarian (never worked on fish) and thought that stroke might explain the sudden death with no obvious external injury. We did not do any type of autopsy.

:( Sorry about the loss! Was it a Captive Bred Clown? Did it have a previous owner?
I'm not sure. No previous owner except the LFS. I think it was probably wild caught but not positive. I didn't write it down when I bought them. The male has likely transitioned to female but its not nearly as big as she was. I've been hesitant to add another, even small, for fear a new one could be more dominant. But I'd love for her to have a mate again! She's been doing a lot of mating type rituals lately. Sad that she's alone....

In regards to this part of your post About already having ich in your tank. If you have ich already in your tank then when you add new(Stressed) fish even if they were previously QT, they will be re exposed ti it and get it. You will need to pull you fish in your tank and tx them and let your tank go fallow for 76 days. Then your tank will be free of it and everyone will be safe.

I've updated my list below, and also edited in the first post for readability in the future.

The one aspect I'm missing is smaller fish that utilize the middle/upper water column. I thought about cardinals or anthias but opted against due to aggression amongst themselves and difficulty with anthias.

Any other suggestions for smaller active fish? I'm intrigued by @ca1ore 40+ damsels but also terrified! My first fish 23yrs ago was a blue damsel. It was MEAN and I swore off damsels from then on. But that was also in a 10g....
