I'm looking for a really quiet hob filter for a bedroom 20 long tank. The hob will about half the flow along with a powerhead or a DC wave head thing (sorry,I don't know what they are called). The tank will be softies and a LPS or two. The hob needs to be relatively cheap meaning not over $35.00 or so. Any suggestions would be great.Thanks.

I've not used the newest version of the Aquaclear HOBs but my AC50 isn't what I would call quiet; and they're not able to re-prime themselves if they're turned off or lose power. I'd probably go with a Seachem Tidal instead.

I saw a video on the Seachem today. It looks ok but it was the most expensive for that group of hobs.I may go that way by next year, but I'll look else where first. I have an Aquaclear 50 on my 40 breeder and it's fine.I'll just keep checking until I'm ready to fully set up. I just got dry rock to do bucket cycling.

Oh heck,I just saw that Amazon has the Aquaclear 50 on sale just under $30. I may have to record my other fifty to check the dbs on it.;)

I'd recommend a Tidal as well. I've had a Tidal 55 running for years w/o a hitch. Quiet and always restarts.

Whisper model 20 or 40 or aquaclear (formerly marineland) or consider internal filter such as Fluval U2 or Penn-Plax Cascade

Do you know they discontinued the replacement impeller for the whisper 20-40.I should have jumped on the aquaclear 50.I'll probably be waiting until my dry rock cures(bucket) for a month or two.Yes I do it the slow way.

I have both the aqua clear and a tidal, and the aqua clear is pretty quiet, I have to fiddle with it every few months as the lid will rattle, but the tidal has been absolutely silent for me, and no fiddling ‍♂️ I think both are good options. The tidal has a sicce pump, and I’m guessing will end up with the same reputation as the Aqua clear filters

I love AQ's, but I wonder how much quieter the new Sicce HOB's are...cause their pumps are dead silent

I just use the patsmart brand, Top fin's HOB. If they lose water, they will pull the water back in and start once again, but it takes a while. I use it on the highest gph setting for my 10 gal. I don't use the cartridges, I use sterile medical sponges cut to size and bio cylinders.
