That was what you looked like on the screen the first five Skype meeting we had in April! :D Just the last week we’ve seen more than your forehead. But that’s okey, it means you still learn! ;)
always remember, builds character, whatever we go through in life.

still using the calcium reactor
No calcium reactor in the experiment system. We use Triton Core7 balling to keep KH and the other stuff up. Our other pH electrode shows around 8,3, but with the same low daily swing.
Here are the latest results from Triton ICP. Samples taken a week ago. Almost all green :D

Don’t worry about the low phosphate. We feed heavily, so no corals are starving :)

...

I was about to add Coral Sprint to our twice a day feeding in the experiment but then I read something about twice a week. So I will have to wait til next week and read up on it before it goes into our food mix.

I think it's every two days. This is from the Fauna Marin site:

Dosing recommendation:
  • 1 dosing spoon per 500 L (132 US gal), dose every 2 days
  • Mix Coral Sprint powder in a cup of tank water, shake well for at least 20 seconds
  • then pour directly into the aquarium.

I initially thought that Coral Sprint could replace the BRS Reef Chili that I'm using now but the ingredients are different:

Reef Chili:

Bio-engineered Zooplankton
Spray Dried Phytoplanton
Freeze Dried Rotifers
Freeze Dried Copepods
Dried Daphnia
Spirulina Powder
Artemia Nauplii replacement diet

Coral Sprint:

premium grade marine Bacterioplankton substitute for feeding corals in ULNS systems.
CONTENT: molluscs and crustaceans.

I'm not sure what a Bacterioplankton substitute means .

So I might stick with Reef Chili...

Yes, they are probably a bit different. But great with a list of ingreadiens in Reef Chili!

When reading up on NPS corals like Dendronepthya there were a lot of thought about the really really small plankton, like phytoplankton and bacterioplankton. The photosyntetic small once are called pikophytoplankton, like cyanobacteria(good ones!). We tried live Synechococcus(a green planktonic cyanobacteria) for a while, but failed to culture them. So it was just a short term test, nothing scientific.
Anyway, the size is what differs. In the ocean there are lots and lots of really small plankton like Synechoccocus which might be a food source for many filter feeders. When diving you can see NPS corals next to Acropora, which at least for me means there are pretty much "food" in the water even where the Acropora grows. Perhaps these small plankton are food for both NPS and SPS corals. Now I fell into these SPS/LPS categories..I mean non-photosyntetic corals like Dendronephthya and stony corals like Acropora species!

The question is just what's in the Coral sprint. Could it be yeast? I don't know :) Too bad they don't have a more specific ingrediens list.

Slightly low on almost every macro and trace element, but overall very good ICP result! :)
Easier to correct low values than high.. ;)

Here’s the Triton ICP test for one of the temporary coral systems. You might think Triton set their setpoints after our numbers :p I don’t think we’ve been that close to so many parameters before.

Still going well when it comes to feeding and nutrient levels in the experiment tank. We feed 12 cubes frozen food, 10ml Acropower aminos, half a teaspoon Reefroids, 16ml EasyBooster and 16 ml EasySPS a day. Plus some mysis for the fish. Nitrate at 0,2 ppm and phosphate at 0,04 ppm this morning.
The volume is 1100 litre. The algae refugium is working well! :)
Here are some polyps from this morning. Before feeding. Not the best pictures, but I think they look happy. Oh, and the colours are my attempt to get the GHL LEDs to look like the sun. Lots of yellow :p

Three days in a row the KH has dropped a little between 12:00 and 15:00 in the experiment tank. Which might make sense, if the time were the same in the tank. But since we want spawning during work hours 12 o’clock is 14 in the experiment, and “Zenith” is at 12 “tank time”. So more KH uptake starts after the four most intense light hours, not during o_O Light is on 06-18.

Not sure it means anything, just fun with a new toy and new data :D

Not forgotten you, excuse the glass, I try not to disturb it too much!
Mother colony, your frag is fine!
... but I can't get a pic because of where it is! ;)

Cool! :D
Does it grow fast or slow? Like a stone coral?

Here’s what the hole looks like today. They remove a little more rock every day.
33F6F43B-4549-40AE-93EC-19D7FCA06034.jpeg

And today I found an urchin that got me and used the “urchin road” between the frags. Very well behaved urchin!
792C7023-AB48-49F6-B9B6-054FD346BFAA.jpeg

Hopefully we soon crack the code on breeding urchins. Our last batch of Diadema setosum larvae seemed to stay in larvae state and never metamorphosed to ready to settle larvae. We had larvae that was 60 days old, and I think they are supposed to settle at 40-45 days.
Now we try a batch of Tuxedo urchin larvae and we have increased the feeding compared to the Diadema. They are at day 8 now and look really well so far!
This is important stuff. I don’t want to clean algae on the rocks of the future 400 000 litre reef tank;Nailbiting So we need lots of urchins..

Today we started to raise the temperature in the spawning experiment. The coolest period is over. This week the temp is at 23,85C. Now it seems like the "new tank syndrome" period is over and the corals looks better and the consumptions has gone up. Great stuff :)
