I thought of this earlier, how much is a pint / 500 ml in a pub over there?
From 5€ to 11€ depending on what part of the town and what type of pub. Around here, where the museum is located, is a kind of old working class district. Nowadays going very hipster...It's called Majorna. Or if you see someone with a 414 tattoo, that's the postal code. It's a thing o_O But there are lots of pubs here with decent prices for beer and food.

To make it easy I did two “coral food recipes” for the experiment tank. One for when PO4 is above 0,06 and one for under 0,06 ppm :)

Umm... I don't care how high you get the alcohol content on the beer recipe's. I think I'll pass! ;Wideyed

Wait! What is this? Is the inventor of Alkatronic installing an Alkatronic on the experiment tank?

Yes! Jonas is an old friend and a regular speaker at our old Coral symposiums. He offered us to borrow an Alkatronic to test it for some time. The machine looks great so far!

Do not pay attention to the Cyanobacteria. They are a part of the experiment... The ugly part..

wonderful, didn't know it was posted in this site.

I will do another try to steer this thread from beer to corals and aquariums again.. ;)

Here's my result for my non scientific study of ReefRoids and phosphate in our experiment tank :)
Reefroids 0 means our recipe without Reefroids.
Reefroids 0,02 means our recipe with Reefroids(1/4 teaspoon 2 times a day).
Reefroids 0,01 means our recipe with Reefroids(1/4 teaspoon 1 time a day).
The PO4 meassurements are taken before any food is added. So if there're 0,04ppm PO4 and 0,02 Reefroids the same day, that means in the morning there were 0,04ppm PO4 and after that we did 2 feeding during the day. So you see the result in PO4 of the feedings the day after. Hope that explains it all :D
PO4 Reefroids 20200520.JPG

Oh, and before anyone say something. The meassurement are done with a Hanna LR, so all my beautiful results might be wrong :p

It was a while since I checked one of the top tanks. Not only because I’m lazy, but also because I need to go into an app to turn on the light(two tanks run on opposite light schedule, the are lit during night time). So perhaps because I’m lazy... Anyway, it looks like we can cover at least 1,5 square meters in the future tank with Acropora austera! :D

For size comparison, the holes in the egg crate are 10mm :) The “box” is an anemone prison...

Interesting... so in theory one can feed Reefroids to raise PO4 instead of dosing!

Hi

I thought I might start a new thread writing about our journey building a new public aquarium. I work as a marine biologist and aquarist at The Maritime Museum & Aquarium in Gothenburg, Sweden. I think I've been here about a decade now. Time flies :)

The Aquarium was founded in 1923, and moved into the museum 1933 when the museum building was completed. Over the years the Aquarium has housed lots of different animals, from Galapagos turtles to monkeys. But since 2001 there's only aquariums. And since 2009 only marine tanks and animals.

We are a non profit museum, funded mostly by the the city of Gothenburg and a foundation. But we also need to get some sponsors, so if you.... ;)

Here a picture just to lighten up amongst all this text..
Snapseed.jpeg

Here comes some info on the Aquarium today. We got about 20 tanks running in the exhibition, from 50L to 25 000L. The total water volume now is around 50 000L. We've focused on tropical reef habitats and Swedish temperate coastal waters.

We are five people working full time in the Aquarium, but mostly three of us are responsible for the aquariums.

And another picture to get people to read the rest of this long post..
Snapseed.jpeg

I've written some about our 10 000L reef tank in my build thread in my profile, so there you can find a lot of pictures of that tank and some of the others.

In this thread I will try to share our work from today until we open the new Aquarium in the fall of 2021.

We closed the museum this Sunday, and our first step is the build a temporary Aquarium in the room where the museum restaurant used to be. Unfortunately we need to clear the old Aquarium facilities before we can move into the new Aquarium, therefor this temporary solution. Our aim is to start up the new tanks with as much "homegrown " corals as possible. And since we're planning on a reef tank with 400 000L water, we will need a lot of corals :)

Corals corals..

I hope you would like to follow our journey from a small public aquarium to a medium size. Please feel free to ask any questions you want(or tell me I'm stupid if you think I'm stupid ;)).

So, here's some pictures from this week, the week after closing.

IMG_6244.JPG

This is where the temporary Aquarium will be located

Okey, that was the startup of a new thread. More will come! :)

Best regards
David

Looks amazing! Any chance we can get some frags? You know, for science!

Been searching for specific corals species lately, to pair up with our “old” colonies. For the sexual reproduction experiment. We haven’t bought that many new corals over the years, so it’s feels a bit strange. But I guess I should feel happy :)
These we bought from a wholesale, not WYSIWYG, just from a list. I think we might have at least three matches! Acropora hyacinthus are easy to ID and to find. The more exciting is Acropora secale(not sure yet, but that is what the wholesale call them. I have more guesses but will go with theirs for the moment). The Acropora selago was probably not a match. Not sure if I’m wrong on our coral or if they are wrong.
All colonies looked like they were dipped in some kind of pastel colouro_O Let’s see how long it’ll take until they look like our other corals!

I did buy an Acropora microclados too. We have two individuals already but too small for the experiment. So this third is for experiments next year. And for frags :)

I was close to do a long post in the daily question thread on “how you beat algae”. But I’ll stay out of it and write some here instead. My thread, my rules? :p
I still can’t understand how certain things goes so slowly into the “reefkeeping rules”. Algae’s will grow wther your nitrate is 0,2 or 25. Pouring chemicals into your tank for killing algae probably isn’t a great long term solutions if you like to have sensitive corals in there too.. And ten more like that.
If something eat the algae faster then they grow back, they’ll decrease and finally “disappear”. If there’s no algae left, feed the grazers. Or did I miss something? ;)

Edited three times because English word are hard to spell...

People don't seem to realize that a healthy reef will quickly become overgrown with algae if you remove the grazers. They are a necessary part of maintaining an aquarium algae free. The only issue I see is that some algaes are hard to find a grazer to manage, such as Bryopsis. Not sure how that is controlled on a natural reef.

I’ve only had Bryopsis in a urchin-free tank :) But I know it might weird to add a Diadema urchin to a smaller tank. Perhaps someone should open a “rent an urchin”-service!

I think it's simply we don't keep the same array of cleaners in our tanks. I know there are bryopsis eating specialist nudis and at least one shrimp (heteropenaeus sp I think) and I doubt a shoal of parrotfish really care if the green is turf algae or bryopsis.

The “good week” after cleaning the tank and removing all Aiptasia anemones. Let’s see how long it last :D

We got to the point that when we dropped a spoonful of mysis in one side of this tank, none of it reach the other side of the small tank. Aiptasia are the king of filtration :p
Time to start breeding Berghia perhaps.

Interesting! What kind of equipment do you use for testing?
We use Salifert to meassure NO3, Ca and KH, Hanna LR for PO4 and a Greisinger digital salinity meter. We also send tests regulary to Triton lab, so these tests are just to see trends. Not so much for the exact number.
After 5+ years comparing our test with Triton results, we can see some trends and size of deviations. This specific Hanna is doing okey when I use it, when comparing to Triton. Usually showing 0,02 ppm under the Triton result for example.

Update on the work site! More and more rock are removed and now you can see the big square in which the new Aquarium will be built. The concrete work will start after the summer, so there are still a lot of work left before that.

A very cool thing they found inside a wall when preparing for new elevators were a paper package from 1931, when they built the museum(It opened 1933). Inside were drawing of the museum and newspapers from Gothenburg from February 1931! :D
