So I figured out exactly why my tank has algae.... well its two reasons.
Reason 1: I cleaned and replaced my carbon, when I rinsed it I used tap water. I must have carried some tap water over into the tank.
Reason 2: I somehow ended up with 2 scarlet crabs and 3 snails.... Need more.

I came to these conclusions because I haven't changed my feed habits and there is never any left over food when i'm done feeding. Also I test for PO4 about once every other week. its been constant. I also do water changes weekly. So phosphates definitely helped the Algae grow but it wasn't the issue. I also test the tank completely once every 21 ish days, every third Sunday (alk every week). Now onto the Invert part I bought crappy snails who would fall off and die.. and I never "reupped" on crabs so I had very few in there. Hopefully this will all be fixed soon.

I will have params up later after grad class!

Any input #reefsquad

Well I lost two fish and they were both my fault.... my tang died b/c of the algae outbreak I didn't feed enough. Then once he passed my royal turned into a royal ***** and tried picking on my paired clowns. They weren't having it so he hid for 3 days and his body was found just now.... Pourin some out for my dead homies

Just skimmed your nice thread. Sorry for your two loss. Basslet I heard can be semi-aggressive. Maybe you could place it in the "social acclimation box" ;)

I have similar equipment: light, powerhead, ATO, heater (@50watts). Curious as to how high your light is above the water surface? Duration of the light cycle?

Besides snail, have you considered a lawnmover blenny beside a tang? The blenny will help with alage to an extent but I do have to augment his feeding with algae to ensure he gets enough food.

@reef-rc the manual says about 14" I have it at the highest setting for height. Also I will put the duration up and at what intensities. But every once in a while i add intensity or take away duration. Just look at the corals they will tell ya what to do.
I have a lawnmower blenny that is doing what he's supposed to but he's just a lil baby... No responsibilities yet but once he gets older he is totally in charge of cutting the grass. Ha but I think a tang will be fine in there since I will be upgrading within a year or two. Hopefully!

Well heres your update... i had an issue with my alk spiking... i brought it down slowly to a stable area. Now my heater just crapped out on me. I just bought it too like 2 months ago. Anyhow my tank just went from a constant 77 degrees to about 70 degrees tonight.

Well its been a while and a ton has changed.
1) Algae is under control :)
2) Parameters got out of wack for a little there but they are back to their means :)
3) All my corals are finally opening up:)(hopefully i didnt just jinx all of them)

Unfortunately, as everyone knows in this hobby, when things go bad, they go bad fast. I bought a coral beauty and never QT'd it. It had velvet and introduced it into my DT. It lasted about 2 weeks and then died. Yesterday I came home and all of my fish had died.... rough day in my neighborhood:(;Blackeye. However, im starting fresh and im going to make a qt tank once i move into my house next week. Right now the tank fallow so that should take care of all the algae and what not.

Well it has been a while but its time for an update. I had recently moved so that was nutz. I was so worried that I was going to lose some "stuff" but everything went great. Unfortunately 2 weeks prior to moving i had velvet run through my tank and kill all my fish. My tank has been fishless for over a month now. My tank has flipped around and did a complete 180 with my algae issue. I lowered my phosphates with gfo, lowered my Alk to about 8.5dkh, and i know its basic, but i started using the filter socks. So low and behold here ya go! Enjoy!

Here are my two new babies. I got them for a steal, I actually paid less for both then most pay much for just one. The top one is day 1 and the second is today or day 4
