I introduced a new 3" purple tang to my tank last night. Currently have a 4" hippo tang in there already. They're not fighting but I do notice the hippo tang very curious with the purple tang. This morning I noticed some tears in the Purple Tang. I have had a mirror up all night. I dont see any tail whipping but the hippo is definitely showing dominance at all times. My question is, is this nipping normal behavior for the first week or two? Should it go away? Its small nips so not a major chunk of the tang fin ripped off but will it grow back relatively soon? Maybe 1mm chunk ripped out of his bottom fin.

this sounds normal to me and should subside with time. What size is your tank?

120g 4x2x2

Tang police incoming.

In all seriousness, it could subside with time. Likely even. It may not though, you will have to keep an eye on it to see if it becomes a problem

Not tang police, but I will say as they get bigger that sized tank is on the smaller side. It will not help matters.

Got it. Shouldn't be an issue in the near future, but as I'm sure you know, the hippo will outgrow that tank in time.

Have no fear, tank upgrade is in a year.
