Hi Guys ;)

iam Sebastian and i like to know what u guys think about my planed tank sizes .

I plan a new reef tank this year, it will be a shallow lagoon style tank with 1-2 mangroves . I never had a shallow tank before, but i really like this idea of a tank.
As a sump i will use a UP22 ( got it already).

My floor can handle around 320kg , so i think about these sizes ( length , depth, height)

1. 110x55x36cm ( 43x21x14)

2. 120x50x36cm ( 49x19x14)

So more length or more depth?
I think prefer more depth but not sure

I want to keep
1-2 flame hawkfish
maybe 4-5(Group) fridmanni or Royal gramma
1 kole or tomini tang
1 Bicolorblenny
1-2 firefish goby

Thanks a lot and sorry for my bad english .

Greetings from germany
Sebastian

No probs. :)

First one will give about 58 gallons or 218L.

Second one will give about the same. :)

Either tank size IMO would be borderline for even the smallest Tangs, which IMO minimum should be a 120cm x 50cm x 50cm (80G) or even better, at least a 90G.

Other than that I think the height is a bit low. Generally I think you want at least 45cm in height. If possible I would do the 120cm x 50cm x 50cm which will allow you to have the Tang more comfortably. :) Or 120cm x 55cm x 45cm. :)

Firefish don’t play well together unless they are a proven pair but I heard Dartfish like the Zebra, Blue Gudgeon and Scissortail can be kept together no problem. :)

Hi Sebastian and Welcome to R2R!!!

I would go for longer if your mainly keeping fish as it will provide more swimming room especially for the tangs

And your English is excellent and much better than my German! Lol

:) and btw your English is really good, I have visited Berlin and Munchen (Munich) before. Unfortunately it was cold in the winter so I was a little tired aha.

TBH the 120cm x 55cm x 45cm is well worth the 5 extra cm of width over 5cm more in height. Wider tanks means more room to put rock and corals.

Hi;)

thank u for ur fast answers ;)

I can also go without any tang if they not feel very well in my tank. I want to keep this tank for some years so i will be sure the fish r all right. So maybe a nice group of royal grammas (5-6?) instead of a tang? Colors would be very nice i think.
In general - i like coral a bit more than fish.

When i think about the weight of the tank i
could go a little bit higher

120x50x40cm ( 48x19x16)

or

110x55x40cm (43x21x16)

Booth tanks r around 230kg filled up with water and a few rocks.
When i add my sump (40kg) and the Aluminium stand ( 10-15kg) i will end up around 300kg .

What u think- is this the better option?
Here u see some drawings from Front and above.
The Nero5 and lamps i got already.

Oh yes , in winter very cold here now, but i hope u enjoyed ur trip:)
Where do u live?

hi welcome to the reef :)
i would vote for the longer 48x19x16 ,could you go 48x18x18?
i think you can have your tomini no problem with 48:cool:

I was born in China, grew up in Canada, spent approximately half my life in both places, I know both languages well and after university in Canada returned to China which is currently my base. :) I know in Canada it gets really cold too but where I was (Vancouver) it’s more rainy than snowy during winter. I enjoyed my trip it was interesting. :) Where do you live?

I think either would be OK but IMO why not 120cm x 55cm x 40cm? :)

If not a Tang you could still consider many smaller fish. Are there any shapes, colors, or behaviors you are looking for!

Hi,

I see your life is pretty interesting and u visited many places - that’s sounds cool.
I stay in Bavaria 100km from munich. So I can visit the alps sometimes ;)

I recalculate about the weight - I made a misstake in my last post.

I can go with 45x19x14.9 ( 115x50x38cm) or
41x21x14.9 ( 105x55x38cm) . These 2 have 230kg.

I just can go with 45x21 (115x55) if I reduce my height to 14.

Ahh I hate these stuff about weight but Iam worry about my floor because he has a heating system. If something breaks Iam done for ;)

Greetings
Sebastian

I see. :) In that case I think it could be just fine if you go with the 115cm x 55cm. :)

I also live on the second floor of an apartment but I am planning a 130G tank lol.

180cm x 60cm x 45cm :) I don’t really see myself having a small tank because some of the fish I like are bigger fish. :)

Yeah - your planned tank has nice dimensions !
I just put it in my tool - it will be around 520kg just the tank . My house would break completely haha :)

When u want to start and with which hardware ?

Thank u for the answer:)

Is a depth of 18(45cm) not a bit too small for a nice rockscape?
foot print of standard 75 gallon
75g 48x18x21 tall ;)

Wow that’s a nice tank . So your dimensions r 120x45cm and 52cm height ? Do your tangs fight or is all peaceful?

In the case of keeping 1-2 tangs in a shallow reef tank and considering my max. weight - do u guys think I could keep 1-2 tangs in like a 53x18 and 14 height ( 135x45x35cm) ?

Or should I pick up a 49x20 and also 14 height ( 125x50x35cm) for a little easier aquascape?

If I go deeper , like tank size 39x35x14 (100x65x35cm) I should not keep some tangs but there r man other fish options out there ?

Not so easy to make a decision when I consider I have this tank for minimum 4-5 years...

thanks for your opinions guys;)

Ahhh ok what kind of house do you live in?

Hardware I will be using BK Eco Max 250 skimmer, the rest I have to decide because I am currently trapped in Taiwan unable to go back to China due to corona.
It’s a pretty new house with a floor heating system . The building company says I can do around 150kg / m2 . That’s the standard here in new houses . But for a tank it’s way to less. Usual the floor can take more weight but it would be on my own risk , they said .... so when the floor is sinking a bit because of the tank the floor heating system can be damaged and cause a huge damage in my wallet then too ;)
