I have a 32 gallon biocube that just had a fish wipeout. I'm trying to diagnose what it could have been and how to proceed.
I had only a coral beauty and a cardinal fish in the aquarium. The cardinal started showing signs of cloudy eyes and rapid breathing.
The next day the Coral Beauty started with the same symptoms. I tried a 5 min fresh water dip on the cardinal and began treating the tank with Prozy Pro.
By the next day the Cardinal was doing no better. After two days I restarted my filtration with carbon and uv filter. The day after that the Coral Beauty died.
Biggest things I noticed was the immensely clouded eyes and extreme breathing. By the end the fins were looking ragged.

Any ideas what this could have been? How should I proceed? If I keep the tank free of fish for 30 days, will that be enough time or do I need to take more drastic measures.

My corals are doing great and the tank in general is within parameters.
Bio Cube 32 Gallon,
76 degrees temp
1.025 Salinity
Nitrates 5.0
PH - 8.0
Alkalinity - 8.9
Phosphates - 0.00
Magnesium - 1270
I perform 20% water changes monthly.
No dosing

If inverts are doing good, would be disease such as flukes, ich or bacterial. If inverts falling, then water
How are you testing water?
Any signs of heavy breathing or loss of appetite?

It sounds like flukes - and too short of a prazipro treatment - also it can lower oxygen levels which may not have been helping. In any case - agree we need more information - sorry for your fish. Flukes require a 6 week fallow period - assuming thats what it was (and I''m not sure)

I don't get how flukes could be introduced when nothing has been added for months. I'm testing with Salfert tests. I test every two weeks and the tank has been stable for months. Does make you wonder if some kind of baterial problem?
The clean up crew has been doing fine, including a Sally Lightfoot and Poreceland crab.
Would you treat the aquarium with anything else or let it sit as is for 6-8 weeks?

It sure does sound like flukes. In some cases, fish can harbor a chronic fluke infection for months and then something stresses them and the flukes become an acute infection, seemingly out of the blue.

Leaving the tank fishless for 60 days will render any parasites non-infective due to a lack of a host.
