Definitely used tap H2O but this was back in the late 70s. Today, I use RODI with well water. Calcium is naturally really high here. Works really well.

I've used RO/DI for the last 8-10 years but prior to that I used well water with good results. My current tap water has excess levels of chloramine that would likely kill anything in a reef.

That is a very sad story. Pesticides in your water? Not on topic, but I eat all organic and have done so since the late 1990’s when it wasn’t in vogue and was difficult to find. I’m sorry that you and millions of Americans have to deal with that.

Oh yes plenty of farm run off chemicals in the water. Of course they only test for a handful but sadly clean water and the environment has become a political issue which is truly sad.

Have and will use it if needed, because there is nothing seriously off.

It can be done if you’re fortunate enough to live in an area with good tap water (Vancouver, Canada). My mixed reef tank (will be 5 yrs in Dec) uses tap with Prime.

I use tap only when I first fill up the tank (since I've generally not had an RO/DI unit and buckets are a pain...have a unit on the way now)

I've never used true tap water, but have used water from the filter in the fridge in a pinch. I've never had any adverse effects from using it, and anecdotally, my uncle whos been keeping reefs for 30 years now, used it for a long time without issue. Both of us do have RODI systems now.

Experiment - 102g without changing water

I use tap water 7 ears (TDS 500-700). He did not change the water and did not add any chemicals.

My MA system contents:

Аdditives - no (Topping up my MA with tap water)
Sump - no
Skimmer - no
Heater 2 pcs 100w
Pump flow Boyu WM- 2 + SunSun JVP-101
Light 150W mg + 7pcs. blue LEDs cre + 2 pcs. T5 24W actinic

Topping up my MA with tap water (settled for one day).
The idea of "topping up method" instead of “replacement” is that the drinking water from the tap (if tap water is not suitable then you can use spring water) you add everything what’s needed in your MA.

The experiment lasts from of November 2012

The runoff from most continents is abysmal, mother nature has her ways of making it viable. With the exception of Japan's radiated ground water...
Test your tap water just like you test ro/di when you think the filters are going south. I filled with distilled, topoff with tap.

I could use tap in part anyway; Great Lakes water really isn’t all that bad: pH 7.2-7.4, 120-140 ppm. I wouldn’t use it mid summer during algae blooms, but short term I see no real damage.
however, I get urban river sourced H2O ....Terrible

Used tap water for my first 5 years. Now I have been using rodi for the past 5 years. Haven't noticed any difference (but my tap water isn't too bad)

When I first started out with easy corals I would top off my tank with tap water straight from my faucet every week. And my corals did great! Now I use RODI water just to be safe with my more expensive coral. Either way I know my water, which is well water, is fine to be added In for an emergency situation.

I used tap water for many years with no problems keeping fish, zoas and some lps. The last 5 years I’ve been using rodi mostly because of the sps bug. I did run a tank recently with tap for about 8 months with no real problems. This was also fish, lps and zoas. Recently bought a home with a well and I wouldn’t try it again.
My tap water is very hard but I live in the country on a well. I just used 15 gallons in my 90 to perform a water change and everything is still doing just fine
