I have an Apex temp probe that late last year starting showing erratic readings throughout the day. About a month ago the readings starting creeping higher and higher. As of the past week the temp has flatlined at 114 degrees Fahrenheit - of course the tank is actually 77-78 degrees. The probe is fairly new at only 14 months old.

Any suggestions of a fix or do I just have a bad probe that needs replacement?

Thanks

That's one good heater if the temp is true! lol

I don't trust my Apex probe. Just check temp myself with Hanna checker.

ha... 114 degrees is going to result in some well done fish and corals. :)

Understood, but if you have any conditions in your Apex programming based on temperature then it becomes problematic. I just hate that a probe barely over a year old has already gone bad.

I haven’t heard of that before; temp probes last a looooooong time in my experience. My oldest is on my LITE from 2013, the two others from apex 2016 units.

Still worth submitting a ticket to Neptune if you are slightly out of warranty. In addition, several credit card companies (for me, AMEX), double the warranty of electronics purchased.

This is one way the temp probes can go bad; by creeping up.
I replaced one a couple of months ago for just this reason.

The other way is a sudden reading of very low temp; unlike above, this failure mode doesn't happen gradually.

The probe is bad. chances are there is a cut in the cable and the wires are touching jsyk. I haven't torn the probes apart but I would assume it works off the principal of measuring impedance via a thermal potentiometer that notices the change in resistance. IE. the more return voltage the higher the temp is. With a short it would read crazy high.... So if you wanna save the probe look for a crack in the line. :)
