I never really gave this any thought until I started putting together my new frag tank pictured below.
About 3 months ago, I purchased a box of Marine Pure balls. I placed them in my 78 degree DT sump to seed with my established tank’s beneficial bacteria.
I’d like to put the balls in the new frag tank filter section but the tank water is really cold. I have ordered a new heater woo! Woo! but it won’t be in till Tuesday.
I can wait, but do I have to? Is 10 degrees a bacteria killer???

Temp does not kill bacteria, within reason, it just may slow them down. Though a different strain, bacteria has been found in the permafrost in Antarctica. Bacteria will almost always find a way to survive. ;)

I do wish their was a study done on how much it does effect them though, and their recovery rate.

I have always found life finding a way to survive interesting.

As long as you are not freezing the bacteria, it will survive. It just may take longer to populate surfaces.

Glad to see this thread as I am about to seed a bunch of media in an offsite system that I sure as heck wasn't going to keep heating.

Right? It’s funny how that there are somethings that you just never consider until you’re faced with it!

I doubt it matters, but after you move them, as you going to try to start cycling with ammonia or a shrimp or something?

What happens after the move may alter my answer.

Hi Randy, So yes today (Monday) I’m receiving Dr. Tims and will add that and the balls to the 50g frag tank. Tomorrow I’m thinking of purchasing a wrasse. Monitoring ammonia (if any) for the following days or more until all looks stable.
ps. A fan of both Chris Farley and yours. Lol

I personally wouldn't start the Dr Tims until you could warm it.

I'd be concerned that the optimal thriving bacteria at low temps may not be the same species that will thrive at higher temps. Just speculation, but there's no reason to rush, IMO.
