Temperature of your reef tank

I was told by someone who has been in this Hobby for a long time to keep it Cold (70 to 72) and Corals will be best.

He told me that the water in Australia is not 80 Degrees therefore you should not have your Aquarium that High.

Is there any Truth to this?

If so why do most people hover around 80 for Temperature?

When I went diving on the Great Barrier Reef (when it comes to Australian reefs in nature, I think it's safe to say he was referring to that. If not, we can at least use it as reference point) the water was a nice 25 degrees :)
There were fish of every kind. Mostly acros and softies depending on the site for corals. And everything looked amazing!

My tank usually sits around 77 ish, however it will stay between 76 and 78 based on heaters and chiller settings.

Have averaged 77.3 with range of 76.3-77.9 over the last 30-days. During the AZ summer, I let it go higher and try to keep it between 78-80.

78-80.... Mixed reef... Sps, LPS, zoas, and palys and everything looks great
