Thank you @blaxsun for the QOTD idea!

Saltwater aquarium equipment gets dirty pretty quick. Beyond dirty though you get algae build up like coralline algae that needs to be removed regular and can be quite the bugger at removing! So what's the best way to clean it and still make sure it's safe? Let's do this thing!

1. What is the best "consumer" cleaning product for cleaning reef tank equipment?

2. What is something you SHOULD NOT clean aquarium equipment with?

Vinegar and a scrubbing brush or newspaper all the way!

Is it citric acid or something else?
Good question - probably citric acid AND something else. Although it doesn't include a direct answer to your question, here is a link to related thread that may provide additional info:

I put this in citric acid for about 5 minutes, then just wiped it off with a Magic Eraser so that I could get most of the junk out, then allow the acid to finish the rest. What can I say, I can’t fully submerge it in my bucket.

Can I use any citric acid product? How often would you recommend using it? My wave maker is starting to grow coraline algae

I believe so, I use the little boxes you can get in Robert Dyas or Sainsbury's, or just bulk buy it on Amazon and once you've cleaned your pumps, just give them a good rinse in RO water.

Mix a batch in a bucket and let the wave maker sit in it for about half an hour, running... the. Take it out and give it a scrub.
