I really don't remember what sand I started out with.
When I did a reboot of that tank, I used CaribSea special grade.

I've used gfo, no gfo, gac, no gac, uv, no uv, T5 lights, led lights, combo of both, less light, more light, blackouts, water changes, no water changes, feeding less, feeding more, chemicals, natural treatments, disturbing the sand, leaving it alone, etc, etc, etc.

Nothing worked for me.

Have you tried the elegant corals method?

trust me.. this is the ONLY thing that worked for me in the end

I had questions about the Clarisea SK-5000 that I asked in another post.
I searched for the question and answers and I need to post them here for reference.
I have copied and pasted the following.

Question...
I have a question about the Clarisea SK-5000.
Can you use the overflow hole to feed it?
My drain is 1.5 inch and I don't want to reduce it to 1 inch.

A 1 inch pvc pipe fits nicely in the intake hole.
Right now, I have a 1 inch pvc pipe going through the intake hole. I use the gaskets that came with the unit on the outside of the pipe and capped the pipe off on both ends. This should keep the water inside the Clairsea.

As long as I can use the overflow opening to feed the Clairsea, I should be good.

So...
Can I feed it from the overflow opening?

Answer...
You absolutely can. I have the sk-5000 and I feed 3 1" pipes from the top. I am waiting on the coolant filter paper from ebay due to deliver Wednesday. It comes out to around $7 equivalent per roll from the 25m long clarisea rolls, 20 micron.

This is the thread that has more info on the Clarisea

This is what Clarisea told me.

Question:
Hello,

I am trying to find out if I can feed the ClariSea sk-5000 through the overflow opening.

My tank has a 1.5 inch drain. I don't want to reduce it because my return line is 1 inch.
My plan is to have the 1.5 inch pipe go into the square opening pointing downwards with an elbow.

I capped off the intake hole with 1 inch pvc pipe and the provided o rings to keep water in the chamber.

Will this idea work?
Can the ClariSea SK-5000 support the flow from a 1.5 inch drain?

Thank you in advance,
Chris

Answer:
Hi Chris
The overflow hole is designed to allow water to escape from the Clarisea without spraying or squirting water everywhere in the case of an emergency overflow.

If the unit alarms then the auto wind on will disable itself and the fleece will block fully until there is nowhere to escape from other than the overflow hole. This prevents the whole troll from just emptying if the float sticks up for example.

On most main overflow pipes there is a valve or reducer which acts to back up the water so that the pipe is full and this prevents gurgling. It would be unusual to have a main drain running silent without a valve.

On this basis there is no problem with reducing your main drain from 1.5 inch down to 1 inch.

Bulk reef supply sell adapters for this task.

I hope this answers your query.

I'm posting this link in the event I need something from Durso.

I'm kinda bummed that the tank only has 2 drilled holes but it is what it Is and I will do the best i can with what I have.
Holes are 1.5" for drain and 1" for return.

nice build how are you liking the reefboot?

Thank you.
I can't wait to get this build going. Right now i've got the tank, stand, all the quipment and ideas.

The ReefBot is GREAT. It's easy to use and I love that I am able to test for so many different things. It's more accurate than I could be running tests.

Still contemplating flow.
I might breakdown and get 2 gyre FX350's. I may add 2 330's as well so I have a gyre covering from front glass to back glass by placing a 350 and a 330 side by side on both ends of the tank.

NEW IDEA!!!

I want to tie my return pump into my manifold pump. I want a valve to keep them separate but if my return should ever fail, I could run the manifold pump to the return line and vice versa.

Awesome thread! I too have an SCA 180 PNP with two drilled holes and I’m watching this thread closely. I appreciate all of the pictures and diagrams! I’ve got my own build thread going as well and I’ll try to keep it updated.

I’m going to run a herbie and run the return line over the back. A little awkward because of the euro brace but not looking too bad. I’m also leaving the sump as-is for the time being and keeping my plumbing a little simpler as I have no reactors at this point.

I've been in a planning stage for almost a year because of a broken leg.
I can't wait to actually get started.

The 180 pnp is really a beautiful tank. I had not really considered Herbie but I will give it some serious thought.

Wher is your build thread? I would like to follow.

I hope you have a good and fast recovery with your leg. You never fully realize how important every little part of your body is until something goes wrong!

So far nothing has been fast with this recovery. I'm happy to be alive and happy to be able to walk and ride again but I'm a looooong ways away from normal.

If you get to your build before I can get to mine, I'm really interested in seeing how you do your return.

Just moved into the new place over the weekend.
I'm finally gonna get this build started!

The tank is on the stand.
Very bad pic but it's the 1st pic I've got.

It's amazing how tall it is. I will have to find something to put it's size into prospective.

Today I ran into my 1st problem.
I went to install my bulkheads and I noticed a chip in the glass. The hole on the drain is chipped on the INSIDE.
It's not a deep chip but...
The bulkhead leaked.

I did not tighten the crap out of it the bulkhead. I Just hand tighten.
I added 1qt of water to the overflow to water test and see a slow leak.

I need to figure this out!
