The manufacturers said in an earlier comment that the sock is polyester. Not paper. If it is paper then I'm OK with that. But they've said that it isn't.

I may be wrong, the material feels more like a paper hybrid type material than the klir roller I was using. I don't know what the environmental impact is of these products is, but in my mind it's offset by not washing filter socks weekly with bleach along with tossing away 90+ filter socks every year and replacing them. We should all be thoughtful of our waste, for sure.

@Reef Diaper for clarification.

Per the manufacturer's FAQ:
"The Reef Diaper filters are made of a very strong, light weight, polyester material."

This idea seems like it could be an excellent biodegradable/eco friendly alternative to filter socks if they choose to pursue something like a plant-based product. In the meantime it seems like an extraordinarily wasteful product. As someone said earlier, we in this hobby should hold ourselves to a higher standard.

If they can develop a biodegradable filter I will 100% support this and use it but until then I will remain adamantly against it.

Congratulations to this week's winners. I won in the first round. And guess what I did yesterday....... After 5 days of being in my tank I took the sock out I skipped the sink part of the rinsing and smelling up the kitchen and it went right in the trash. Install the new one good to go I will post more in my build thread thank you again

Very timely, I truly hate cleaning filter socks in my sump! The Reef Diaper disposable socks could be the answer for me. Tried just using filter floss instead but socks just seem to work better.... Bring on the Reef Diapers. Cool name....
I'd love to skip the container of filter socks waiting to go into my poor washing machine! Wanting to try these!

I love my reef diapers…work great! I find it funny people complain about the waste they produce. However I am sure that they throw a lot more other things away without thinking twice. I hope that if they had kids, they used cloth diapers. These create way less waste than the disposable diapers used on kids.

My sump has one felt filter sock and it catches everything. I find myself changing it every three days or so. In the summer it isn't a problem, just blast it with high pressure garden hose and its good as new. Wintertime is another story, so these disposable socks are the ticket. I am now using the Reef Diaper disposable filter socks and change them out about the same time frame. I don't know may continue with this in the summer we will see.

REEF DIAPER GIVEAWAY.jpg

Reef Diaper - "Soon after building our family reef tank, we discovered what a nasty chore it was to clean the filter socks. It was a dirty job that no one wanted. This often resulted in a bucket full of stinky filter socks, waiting to be cleaned. Disposable filters were the obvious solution. I went online to purchase some new filters and to my surprise, I couldn’t find a product to solve this seemingly simple problem. Others in the hobby were having the same issues and some had even resorted to sewing their own. I couldn’t stand washing another nasty filter sock so I decided to create the latest product from our small family business. After testing multiple filter materials and designs, the Reef Diaper was finally born. It is the simple low cost solution we were looking for. The Reef Diaper has helped make the hobby even more enjoyable for our family and we are confident it will do the same for you."
