Back in the day it was Albert Thiel.
Still have one of his books.
Most mag articles kept me updated.
The above 3 are awesome.
As time went by I got into actual ocean chemistry/parameters and focused on keeping them within reasonable ranges. Still do to this day.
Here is his book and a page from it.
Check out recommended alk levels.

Have not heard that name in a long time. Read his books in the 90's and believed they were the gospel of reef keeping.

I picked up everything I know from the folks on this forum, like Randy, etc. I disn't even bother looking for experts such as Albert Thiel, etc. but as I heard their names mentioned on here I've been meaning to get some of their books and articles.

Eric Borneman

when everyone else was laughing about pico reefs working vs not working, whether they were just plumbing tricks and not real setups, he was immediately on board and had much help to offer.

agreed on Albert Thiel: a gentleman's gentleman master aquarist. he used to run a sticky at nano-reef.com where he helped about two thousand nano reefers be better.

I remember being in awe that Randy and Eric and Ron S were willing to talk with average reefers constantly bugging them for help in their reefcentral forum in 2001.
