I started of with FW tanks with a single goldfish that started out as an xmas present joke then moved the whole way through the FW scene up until discus and the now onto reef hence the name. A FW discus tank is just as hard to keep as a reef tank. Depnding on the size and amount of Discus the require daily small water changes and can be as costly as some SW fish. They do look beautiful in a schoal though.
When things were going wrong for me as a newbie SW reefer i was caught between switching back to discus or staying. I stayed

love my little reef now!!

I started with freshwater even way back when I was in high school with guppies and mollys and swords. Lots of babies lol's. Later had a 50 g that hubby broke when he threw a dog bone (dog dropped it on his bare foot!) He meant to toss it into the couch but it sailed over and broke the tank. Fish in the bathtub lol's. Next tank, a 20 gal survived the quake in 89 with just some water splashed out. Went to a 100 gal planted and moved into oscars. Now I have a 40 g tall that I started for my young granddaughters. Wanted a tank down low for them. Plus I added a betta named blueberry. I think blueberry is gone so need to replace with blueberry 3 or a new one lol's. When we change the flooring, I may go to a 50-100 gal freshwater. I love the tetras. And this tank takes abuse very well. Rare water changes, rare cleaning out canister filter and hob filter and is forgiving.
