So today I made frozen food cubes. I started at the Asian Market which I could stop at as I had to pick up my daughter in a town with one (other time I purchased everything local. I bought 10.36# of seafood for $105.75 or $10.20 per pound. Hykari brine, mysis, spirulina brine cost me at least $17 per pound plus tax. So about a 30% savings.

I mixed equal parts (1 cup each) of diced smelt, tuna, squid, scallops (a little light on the scallops as the cut finer so took up less space in the cup and 2 parts (2 cups) peeled deveined frozen shrimp and 1 1/2 tsp Bulk Reef Spirulina powder. I made two batches of this, each filled four of my trays equaling 504 cubes I feed 9 cubes a day between 7 tanks.

I chopped them in a Ninja 9 cup food processor on high pulling off the sides after each run with a spatula 5 full cycles. Then with the spatula I spread it in my silicon ice cube trays that I use and finalized by scraping clean with a butter knife.

This left me somewhere between 1/3 to 1/2 of the seafood left. Being diced I freeze it in ziplocks and thaw for my predators. Since it’s fixed I don’t have to tear by hand when I feed and spreads it out better to avoid aggression during feeding.

This is my second time, first time I bought local so didn’t get the squid so I used salmon and my smelt was gutted so guessing this will be a little more nutritious. Only drawback I have is when I thaw the cubes, I have to separate the cubes where as the Hykari separates with a quick stir. However I find all of my fish are eating this.

Thought others might like to know and I want a record so I can remember what I need to do each time.

It’s really not that bad, but probably ought to cook it and add some salt.
I’ve always told my family my house will never be short of protein if they need protein I have plenty of varieties that are and I’m not lying “healthy” ;)

This must be DIY frozen fish food weekend. Just made a batch yesterday. Seafood in the brown paper wrappers is a whole octopus minus the head, and whole squid.

Nori and Krill in the zip locks.
