So despite my extreme skepticism that this would end in any way other than some mud slinging on FB and a few people shamed or banned from sites, and me thoroughly chastened and keenly aware of the dangers of trusting strangers and paying with unrecoverable funds, I somehow recovered my funds.

Eli paid me then and there, just a few short hours ago now. He paid me for what he took from me, and I took it upon myself after a few quick seconds of thought to collect for my new friends while the getting was good. If anyone wants proof of that I'm sure they can chime in ;-)

$1950 in all, with $57 in fees paid by Eli. Cheaper than a speeding ticket.

What have we learned tonight, friends? The internet is a scary place? Check. R2R is still an awesome community? CHECK. people make mistakes? Check. Covid sucks? Check. Jim Bayles is actually pretty nice? Check. Innocent Eli pretty nice too but not so innocent? check.

What I want to know is, WHO THE HECK HAS THAT OTHER $900 and CHANGE!

Ok so let me see if I got this right. After all that denial and deception, Eli admitted he did it but didnt actually profit off it himself? And he still tries to pin it on some unknown villain?

Im glad you got your money back but I wish this dude would have owned up 100%. I wonder who the unknow mastermind financier behind Eli is?

Also, if the venmo account is registered to eli, how does he not have access to it? Or why would his account be linked to a bank or card that he doesnt have access to???

Well, if you take it at face value what he copped to, Eli doesn’t own the Venmo account. He says he got roped into it by another friend/person. That person is clearly part of the poker group, but he didn’t want to give him up. So the Venmo account in this explanation belongs to the person we didn’t identify but was working in concert with Eli the whole time. They split the money 50/50 according to what he told me, and Eli covered the other guy’s half when he paid us back. So he either is out $975, or will claw it back from his partner and will only be out the PayPal fee. But yeah, there could be another guy getting away with it, but Venmo won’t share that information and they seem to have not even shut his account down. I mean what a world
