After some time away from the hobby it time to get a tank back up and running :)

back story - I've consistently had a reef tank over the last 10 years until last year. Velvet struck with a vengeance along with on-going concerns about managing consumption from our well for the water changer and more so disposal of water from water changes into the septic.

Fast forward to today - Just doesn't feel the same without a tank so a Triton build to minimize water changes it is!

equipment list:
  • Red Sea Reefer 350 in white - Love the rimless look, and the stands look great. It was a tough call against the IM with an external overflow, I couldn't justify the price difference
  • lights - 2x Kessil 360W on a 36" Aquatic Life Hybrid fixture with 2x ATI Blue+; 1x ATI T5 Coral +; 1x ATI Actinic
  • light hangers: we have vaulted ceilings and the tank it 8" off the wall for access, so I'll be making my own light hangers
  • control: APEX classic controller(from last tank) , breakout box, WXM, ALD
  • float switches: 2x avast pressure switches (these things are awesome!
  • return pump: Tunze 1073.050 dc return pump (450 GPH @ 5')
  • skimmer: (this thing drives me crazy - top is really hard to get off) Skimz SN143-QP Monzter mini protien Skimmer Footprint: 7 9/16" x 7 7/8"
  • circulation: 2x Vortech MP40 with battery backup [ended up needing a new wet side and an entire new MP40 :( )
  • carbon/GFO reactor: TBD
  • Rock: Picking from what I have saved up over the years
  • Top: Clearview Pisces EXO
  • ATO: BRS peristalic I had laying round
  • Water Change: APEX DOS for when needed
  • Dosing Pump: GHL 2.1 Doser
  • Heaters: BRS Titanium - nice and compact :)
  • Sump: Synergy Reef TS-26 - stock V3 sump refugium space is rather compact.

Ont wiring. What a mess. 8 DC power bricks.

2x kessil 360w
1x kessil H380
2x vortech
1x tunze return
1x GHL doser
1x ecotech battery charger

Doodled up some Velcro strap holders and mounted them to the side board. Now all the power supplies have air moving around them and are accessible. When I took the picture I was waiting for the new mp40 to arrive

Mounting to the stand...I expected to be space challenged but it got out of hand quickly. I didn’t want to drill into the stand so I picked up some shelving that was pre-laminated. Cut to size and used a forstner bit to recess some magnets from Lowes. The magnets have a rubber coating and don’t pull to much. Matching magnets were applied to the inside of the stand using command adhesive so they are removable.

Added a shelf at the top and bottom. Upper shelf has two large holes for passing cable, lower has center support in case I can fit dosing containers in there when it’s all done.

Time for some light hangers. Used 1/2” bendable EMT conduit and some 3D printed brackets from thingiverse. The brackets are nice, way to snug though. If you do something similar punch out the hole a bit. Conduit was 220 sanded, ethching primer, 220 sanded, two coats of Matt black spray paint.

to hang the aquatic life fixture with the stock looped metal wires I made two ABS 3D printed bushings.

Quick shootout to some great vendors that supported getting water into the tank:

@ctenophore - Avast Marine. I had an older probe mount of theirs which was damaged, they worked with me to get a replacement. super fast response - just great folks with great products

Synergy Reef - great sump, quick to respond, made a small change for no fee to accommodate my skimmer. really impressed!

@Kessil - love the lights kessil makes. the adjust-ability is perfect, looks great, and am looking forward to seeing the H380 in action

@RedSeaKev - red sea service was top notch. took care of a small issue and event sent a care package. much appreciated. tank looks awesome!

only unpleasant experience is Ecotech @RandoReefer

To preface over time i have had multiple generations of radions and MP40s along with an MP10. Along the way I needed odds and ends and they were great.

Recently I broke a small power cable that connects the MP40 control unit to the backup battery in case power goes out. Cable is a reasonable $5, so i went to order it and they want $15 shipping. I thought it was mistake so i contacted support and they said the shipping costs are "calculated directly by the carrier".

strangely I just ordered replacement suction cups and barbs directly from Tunze - 4.75 in shipping. avast shipping was about the same. I could go on as I think everyone has a better rate than Ecotech.

I have no issue paying for shipping, it is a shame to see a company try to profit on shipping like Ecotech is.

on principal I'll just have one MP40 when the power goes out!

sump plumbing ordered.

for the red sea reefer it looks like the following are needed:

www.marineandreef.com:

(3) RedSea part number R42221 to replace the existing bulkhead connectors

from store:

thick Teflon tap
clear primer
cement

pvcfittingsonline.com

3/4" x 1" Sch 80 PVC Reducing Male Adapter - MPT x Socket 836-102
- moves read sea adaptor back to 1"

1" PVC Socket Gate Valve Spears 2022-010
- control flow

3/4" Schedule 80 PVC 45 Elbow 817-007
- I ordered 2, likely only use 1 for angling the tubing away from the sump towards the tank fitting

BRS:

3/4” SCHEDULE 80 PIPE
- safety drain
1” SCHEDULE 80 PIPE
- main drain

3/4” SCHEDULE 80 MALE PIPE ADAPTER
- safety drain to PVC

3/4” SCHEDULE 80 UNION SLIP X SLIP
1” Schedule 80 Union Slip x Slip
- likely will end up returning, the connection to the tank should be enough. just didn't want to risk it

3/4" PIPE ADAPTER SPIGOT X BARB
- two of these for the return pump

3/4” SCHEDULE 80 COUPLER SLIP X SLIP
- should not be needed, just incase

SCHEDULE 80 REDUCING BUSHING 1” SPIGOT X 3/4” SLIP
- two of these - the sump has a 1" bulkhead for the return and I'm using 3/4"

WHITE SOFT SILICONE TUBING 3/4" ID
- for connecting the return pump to the bulkhead barb

Picked up a seneye for nh3 in the qt- before putting it in I took some pare measurements with the kessil on full with and without the T5 - the water is dirty from cycling, some par is likely being lost. Either way I didn’t document well - about 100 with just kessils on the rocks where the corals are going and 150 with the T5s on to supplement.

Quick update. Tank is settling in. Next batch of fish out of QT and a friend shared some corals to get the tank started :). Diatom bloom came in late and is going away. There was a bacterial bloom, probably from over feeding- just so nice to see the fish eat! Put a 24 watt UV in the display yesterday which is clearing the tank right up. Looking forward to the tank stabilizing!

Made some 3D printed legs to raise the skimmer up a bit to work with the depth of the synergy sump. Strangely the acrylic used to support the skimmer has a taper in the thickness, all four legs are slightly different to have a good friction fit.

part of the challenge on this tank is the smaller (than I’m used to) sump. For a reactor I went with the avast spyglass small. Wow, very cool unit. So much easier to service than the traditional units with the twist top or thumb screws!
