So i got home today and my torches and frogspawn closed up so i do some tests everything is the same as it always is but I tested ammonia using an api test kit I know junk.... and it showed 6ppm ammonia so I panicked did multiple tests same thing tested straight distilled and tested 0 but then I tested fresh salt mixed water for my water change and ammonia also 6ppm in a fresh batch?!?!?!?! This cant be right can it I dont have any other test kit for ammonia. Could this be possible I did the water change reguardless.

If there is actually 6ppm ammonia, its likely coming from the salts magnesium chloride. But considering its tropic marine pro im doubtful because they are supposed to use super pure salts. But its possible.

That said, definitely need to use ammonia detoxification like seachem prime, or amquel. Test your nitrates to see if they rise as would be expected. Keep in mind ammonia remover doesnt remove it just detoxify it. So youll need to add it daily until ammonia is zero again.

Dont do anything reactive

all your fish would be dead and water cloudy if your ammonia was not controlled, it is, post a tank pic

the smell must be overtaking your whole house, if not, you don’t have six ppm

reasons coral are closed are numerous, and not ammonia I bet

what stated mechanism overcame the ability of a post cycle reef? Do you have eight missing fish unstated

a tank pic, not your test reading, is about to show if you have ammonia above thousandths ppm much less six ppm.

ammonia is not out of control after cycling, let’s see pics. No brand of sw mixes to lethal ammonia levels.

handy fact before we get pics: I’ve never seen one reef ever at any time fail to manage ammonia after a cycle. I’ve seen mass test misreads though. Assuming the reading is correct, what’s the stated mechanism for the new inability to control? Test kit is wrong I bet we never find out why, it just is

What ever became of this? I am starting a new tank and because my RODI is not yet set up, I bought premixed tropic marin coral pro salt water from my lfs. Ammonia is off the charts. What would dr. Tim think?

But it’s not off the charts. Salt mixes are known to contain some organics and trace ammonia when mixed
Harmless levels that harm no reef or reef animals

seneye saying it’s off the charts is one thing, any other kit is just over reporting like they do in our false ammonia alert thread

there are no salt mixes that are bad or harm corals.

Source water testing zero means nothing, this is an over report of safe trace ammonia levels so distilled wouldn’t have any.

im adding this thread to our false ammonia reading false alarm thread.

Why do you think it matters to your torches and frogspawn that you have ammonia? they dont really bother about ammonia. And you certainly dont have 6 ppm ammonia unless your fishes are already dead.

So suggest looking at other factors

Are you using a saltwater test on freshwater RODI? It won’t give proper results if so
